👩‍🍳What’s cooking in the newsroom?

Nvidia faces setback in launch of new AI chip for Chinese customers

👨‍💻News - Nvidia has informed its Chinese customers that there will be a delay in the launch of the company's new AI chip, designed to align with U.S. export regulations.

The delayed chip that was expected to launch as early as 16 November is now slated for the first quarter of next year. The chip known as H20, is the most powerful among Nvidia's trio of chips designed for the Chinese market.

😳What does this mean for Nvidia? The tightened U.S. export restrictions have opened opportunities for Nvidia's competitors, including Huawei, to secure orders that would typically go to Nvidia.

Nvidia was counting on these new chips to sustain its market presence in China, given the impact of Washington's stricter export rules. However, the delay is likely to worsen Nvidia's market position.

🤕How will this affect China? Well-funded Chinese tech companies, including Baidu, Tencent and Alibaba, have openly admitted that they had already secured a decent supply of Nvidia's AI chips long before Washington prohibited Nvidia from exporting them. This is because the companies were already aware of the growing tech conflict between the two nations and expected something like this to happen.

This leaves smaller AI players who did not have the cash flow to buy Nvidia's chips in bulk. In reality, they are the only ones affected by the situation as they are now having to settle for less powerful chips that are not subject to U.S. export controls.

New UK law allows patenting of key AI technology and its training process too

👨‍⚖️News - The English High Court has overturned a previous ruling from the UK Patent Office (UKIPO) concerning the patent eligibility of key aspects of AI technology.

The legal shift now permits the patenting of both the training process of artificial neural networks (ANNs) and the ANNs themselves in the UK.

🤖What are ANNs though? ANNs are computer systems inspired by the human brain. They learn from data to recognize patterns, make decisions, and perform tasks—similar to how humans would. They play a vital role in AI and machine learning, shaping user experiences with technology that seems self-aware, much like humans.

🤓How will this ruling impact UK's AI sector? The decision holds considerable benefits for the UK's AI industry, increasing its appeal for investments in innovative companies and research and development efforts that will drive the advancement of AI.

According to experts, this could be particularly relevant in finance and banking sectors, where there is ongoing development of new emotional perception for natural language processing (NLP) in economic and financial crime detection, along with sentiment analysis.

Formula One explores AI use in monitoring race track violations

🏁News - The governing body of Formula One is experimenting with AI to address violations of track limits at the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix this weekend. For context, track limits are the borders of a racing track that define where drivers are allowed to drive their cars during a race.

🤔Why do they need AI though? The overwhelming workload faced during the July 2 Austrian Grand Prix, where only four individuals had to handle around 1,200 potential violations, highlighted the need for a more efficient system.

This need became more apparent during the title-deciding Qatar weekend in October, where eight people were assigned to assess track limits and monitor 820 corners. Despite their efforts, with 141 reports sent to race control and 51 laps deleted, some breaches remained unaddressed.

🧐How will AI help? The FIA will utilize 'Computer Vision' technology to count pixels along the track edge. This will help in easily and quickly identifying breaches — instances where drivers fully cross the track boundary.

Tim Malyon, the head of FIA's remote operations, explained that the idea is to employ AI similarly to its application in cancer screening. The aim is to use AI to filter out instances where there is absolutely no breach of track limits, allowing skilled professionals more time for the 20% of cases that require closer examination.
