Figure AI ditches OpenAI to build its own AI for humanoid robots, teases breakthrough

• CEO Brett Adcock has promised to unveil a groundbreaking humanoid robot innovation within 30 days.

♨️News – Figure AI is parting ways with OpenAI. The robotics company, which is developing general-purpose humanoid robots, announced Tuesday on X that it’s walking away from its partnership with the ChatGPT maker.  

Instead, Figure AI says it has made a “major breakthrough” with its own in-house AI. While details are still under wraps, founder and CEO Brett Adcock teased that the company will unveil “something no one has ever seen on a humanoid” within the next 30 days.  

🕵️‍♂️The inside scoop – The move comes as a surprise, given OpenAI’s influence and the visibility that comes with working with the company. Just last August, Figure AI had announced that its Figure 02 robot would use OpenAI’s models for natural language interactions.  

But Adcock says the collaboration wasn’t the right fit. OpenAI’s intelligence models are designed for a broad range of applications, while embodied AI—AI designed for physical systems like robots—requires a more tailored approach. Instead of relying on an external model, Figure AI decided to build its own.  

“To solve embodied AI at scale in the real world, you have to vertically integrate robot AI,” Adcock explained. “We can’t outsource AI for the same reason we can’t outsource our hardware.”

Google rolls out Gemini 2.0 Pro and 2.0 Flash-Lite models

👨‍💻News - Google has officially launched its long-awaited AI model, Gemini 2.0 Pro Experimental, alongside several other key updates. 

The launch follows an accidental early announcement in the Gemini app’s changelog last week. Now, the company has made the experimental version available on its AI development platforms, including Vertex AI and Google AI Studio. Gemini 2.0 Pro will also be accessible to subscribers of Gemini Advanced via the Gemini app.

🧐What’s it like? The new Gemini 2.0 Pro model is particularly strong in coding and handling complex prompts. According to Google, it offers a deeper understanding and improved reasoning of world knowledge compared to previous models. One of its most notable features is its ability to call external tools like Google Search and execute code for users. 

Additionally, the model boasts an impressive 2 million-token context window, allowing it to process about 1.5 million words in one go. To give some context, that’s enough to read all seven books in the Harry Potter series with room for around 400,000 words left over.

🤓What’s more? Google is also rolling out its Gemini 2.0 Flash model to all users starting Wednesday. On top of that, the company is introducing Gemini 2.0 Flash-Lite, a more cost-efficient option that promises better performance than its predecessor, Gemini 1.5 Flash, all while maintaining the same price and speed.
