PLUS: Apple’s New Visual Intelligence

Reading time: 5 minutes

Key Points

  • New rules will include mandatory reporting on cybersecurity measures and red-teaming test results.

  •  The data aims to ensure technologies are safe, reliable, and resistant to misuse and cyberattacks.

☕News - The U.S. Commerce Department has proposed new rules that would mandate advanced AI developers and cloud computing providers to submit detailed reports. These requirements aim to ensure the safety of these technologies and their resilience against cyberattacks.

📖What this means - The proposal would require developers of "frontier" AI models and computing clusters to report their development activities to the federal government.

The proposal would also mandate reporting on cybersecurity measures and the results of red-teaming tests, which assess risks like the potential for AI to aid in cyberattacks or make it easier for non-experts to develop chemical, biological, radiological, or nuclear weapons.

👨🏻‍💻Why it matters - The department stated that the information gathered through this proposal will be used to ensure these technologies meet high safety and reliability standards, can resist cyberattacks, and minimize the risk of misuse by foreign adversaries or non-state actors.

Key Points

  • Apple’s visual intelligence combines reverse image search and text recognition, with ChatGPT integration for added help.

  • The feature enters beta for U.S. users in October, with global rollout planned for December 2024/ early 2025.

🍎News - At the Apple Event 2024 on Monday, the highlight was definitely the new visual search feature for the iPhone. Using Apple Intelligence, this AI-driven tool is set to transform how we search and interact with our devices.

🌟How so? The new Camera Control button on the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus lets you activate Apple's "visual intelligence," which combines reverse image search with text recognition.

Using visual intelligence, you can search for a restaurant and instantly get details like hours, ratings, and reservation options. Similarly, you can quickly add event details from a flier to your calendar. The feature pulls information from Google Search and is designed with privacy in mind—or so Apple says—ensuring that your images will not be stored.

📲What's more? Thanks to Apple’s partnership with OpenAI, the new Camera Control button on iPhone 16 models can also send queries to ChatGPT. For instance, this feature could help with homework assignments when you’re stuck.

Visual intelligence, along with other Apple Intelligence features, will enter beta for U.S. English users in October. Users in other countries can expect access starting in December and extending into early 2025.
