👩‍🍳What’s cooking in the newsroom?

EU, U.S prepare to crack down on AI-powered child sexual abuse

👨🏻‍⚖️News - The European Commission has announced that it is considering making it illegal to create AI-generated images and deepfakes depicting child sexual abuse within the European Union as part of its efforts to update laws in response to technological advancements.

The proposal also suggests making it illegal to live-stream child sexual abuse, possess or share "pedophile manuals," and addresses the use of AI chatbots in child abuse.

😳But how big is this issue really? The commission conducted an impact assessment before the proposal, which found that increased online activity and advancements in AI technology have created new opportunities for child sexual abuse. Additionally, it noted that according to a 2023 survey, 92% of EU citizens agreed that children are now facing greater risks online, and 73% consider online child sexual abuse to be a significant problem.

💁🏻‍♀️What's more? In related efforts, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced plans to hire 50 artificial intelligence experts this year to combat child abuse. 

Although the agency didn't provide specific details, it mentioned that the experts would contribute in cybersecurity, data science, and software engineering. Notably, this initiative is part of the Biden administration's goal of harnessing AI's benefits while addressing its biggest risks.

Meta to label AI-generated images created with OpenAI, Midjourney and other tools 

🦸🏻‍♂️News - Meta Platforms has announced that it will soon begin detecting and labeling images generated by other companies' AI services using invisible markers already present in the files. 

This simply means that Meta will put labels on any content containing the markers when it's posted on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. 

⭐What's the most important point here? Meta already labels content produced with its own AI tools. With the new system, Meta will also be able to label images made on popular platforms like OpenAI, Microsoft, Adobe, Midjourney, Shutterstock, and Google, according to Nick Clegg, Meta's president of global affairs.

Additionally, Meta is developing tools to identify synthetic media, even if the metadata has been changed to hide the AI's involvement, marking a promising start. 

🙄Is this enough though? In an interview, Clegg expressed confidence in the company's ability to accurately label AI-generated images. However, he highlighted that creating tools to label audio and video content was more challenging and still in progress. As a temporary measure, Clegg stated that Meta would require individuals to label their own edited audio and video content, with penalties for not doing so.

So, while it doesn't address all aspects, the initiative gives a preview of a growing set of standards that technology companies are working on to reduce the possible negative impacts of generative AI technologies.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella applauds India's AI progress, shares company's future vision 

🕴🏻News - Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, who is currently on his annual visit to India, praised the country for its significant progress in adopting AI technology.

The Indian-born CEO also highlighted the importance of rapidly spreading AI worldwide to achieve equal economic growth.

😀What more did the exec say?

• During his speech at a gathering of business leaders in Mumbai on 7 February, Nadella stressed the importance of cooperation between India and the United States in establishing norms and regulations for AI. 

• Citing government data, he mentioned that India's GDP is projected to reach $5 trillion by 2025. The growth coming from AI, which is expected to be around $500 billion, will be "worth tracking for us," he added.

• Nadella also shed light on how villagers in India are already assisting Microsoft in developing AI tools, mentioning a social impact organization in Maharashtra's Kharadi whose members lend their voices to Microsoft to train AI models in Marathi.

• In an interview, the CEO described the tech giant's vision of becoming India's AI Copilot, guiding the nation towards advancements in AI. 

• In line with this, the exec announced a skilling initiative by Microsoft, dubbed the ADVANTA(I)GE INDIA initiative, under which the company aims to train 2 million people with AI skills by 2025.
