👩🍳What’s cooking in the newsroom?
AI forum concludes successfully as tech leaders agree on regulation
🤓News - A group of top tech executives, including Sundar Pichai, Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and Sam Altman, met with US senators in Washington on Wednesday to discuss the rise of AI and how it should be regulated.
The 'AI safety forum' ended successfully with Senator Chuck Schumer calling it "historic." He revealed, in a press briefing, that the attendees agreed on the need for AI regulation, but there was little consensus on what specific rules should be implemented.
👩🎓What were the key highlights of the meeting?
Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and X, said that the key point of the meeting was the need for an independent body to oversee AI development and ensure its responsible use. He described the discussion as "very civilized" and said that it involved "some of the smartest people in the world."
Senator Chuck Schumer stated that Congress must take steps to mitigate the potential risks of AI, such as bias, job displacement, and other doomsday scenarios. He argued that only the government can put in place the necessary guardrails to ensure that AI is used safely.
In fact, the attendees also discussed the urgent need to protect the 2024 US elections from AI-powered disinformation.
EU to grant AI startups access to its most powerful computers
🧑🏫 News - The European Union wants to give ‘responsible’ startups access to its high-power computers to train their AI models. But startups would be required to follow the EU's AI governance rules.
The EU has been working on a comprehensive AI regulatory framework, but it will take some time to finalize. In the meantime, it has announced a set of voluntary rules to help businesses prepare for the formal regulations.
👩💻What’s the motive behind this move? By offering AI startups access to its supercomputers, the EU is making it easier for them to develop innovative AI products and services. This could help to boost the European AI industry and make Europe a leader in the global AI race.
The EU already has a policy that allows companies to apply for access to supercomputers. The new initiative will make it easier for AI startups to qualify for access.
Well, for that AI startups will need to show, they are developing and using AI in an ethical and responsible way. This means their AI systems must be transparent, accountable, and fair.
OpenAI opens its new office in Dublin, creating opportunities in AI
👩🎓News - OpenAI announced, on Thursday, that it is opening an office in Dublin, Ireland. This will be the company's third office, following its headquarters in San Francisco and its London office.
The AI company is not planning to hire a large number of people in Dublin right away. However, it does intend to grow its presence over time.
OpenAI chief strategy officer Jason Kwon said the Dublin office will not be the company's European headquarters and it will be managed by a team of people, rather than a single executive for now.
🕵️♂️But why did OpenAI choose Dublin?
Dublin has a strong talent pool of tech workers, including many who are already familiar with the culture of companies like Meta and Google. This is due in part to the fact that a number of other U.S. tech companies have offices in Dublin.
Further, Ireland is a good place to engage with Europe from a regulatory and business development standpoint. This is because Ireland has a favorable regulatory environment for tech companies, and it is also located in the center of Europe, which makes it easy to do business with other European countries.
In addition to these advantages, Dublin is also a relatively affordable city to live in, which can be attractive to tech workers.
