👩‍🍳What’s cooking in the newsroom?

Elon Musk reveals xAI's chatbot Grok will rollout next week to X premium+ subscribers

👨‍💻News - Elon Musk has confirmed that Grok, the chatbot from his AI firm xAI, will be available to all Premium+ subscribers of X (formerly Twitter) sometime next week.

While Elon Musk's estimates on when products will be delivered haven't always been spot-on, it seems Grok integration is already in progress, as hinted by code developments in X's own app.

🤭What can you expect? According to screenshots shared by app researcher Nima Owji;

  • Grok is now part of X's web app, accessible at twitter.com/i/grok. Its icon, a unique solid black square with a white slash, appears in the left-side navigation bar, distinguishing itself from other X icons outlined in black.

  • A second screenshot showed that non-Premium+ subscribers will be prompted to upgrade for access to Grok.

  • While not publicly accessible, these features indicated that the rollout of Grok is near.

😀What's more? It's no secret that, in addition to being trained on a knowledge base similar to ChatGPT and Meta's Llama 2, Grok will have real-time access to information from X. However, this is expected not only to enhance the chatbot's performance but also to drive more sign-ups for X's Premium subscription, which hasn't met Musk's expectations so far.

UK and South Korea ink deal to boost collaboration on AI technology

🔏News - The UK and South Korea have signed a new agreement to enhance government collaboration on digital services and AI.

This collaboration aims to combine the expertise of both countries to maximize the advantages of AI technology for the benefit of the public and the advancement of mutual goals.

The key takeaways:

  • The UK's Government Digital Service (GDS) will work with South Korean representatives, exchanging best practices, and jointly exploring new opportunities in AI.

  • Together, they'll work on exploring where and how AI can be used to improve government services, and also share insights on the development and applications of AI.

  • Building on commitments from the AI Safety Summit, both nations will work together to ensure that AI technologies are used responsibly, and uphold shared democratic values. They will also promote equal access to the technology for everyone.

  • The two nations have also agreed to co-host the next AI Safety Summit in 2024.

  • Additionally, the UK's Royal Society and the National Research Foundation of Korea will invest £4.5 million in the UK-ROK International Collaboration Awards to support collaboration on new AI research. This investment is aimed at driving the development and commercialization of AI technologies.

Indian PM discusses AI deepfake threat with world leaders at virtual G20 summit

☕News -  Addressing world leaders at the virtual G20 summit, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the rise of AI but cautioned against its misuse, emphasizing the specific threat posed by deepfakes.

🤓Key points from the address:

  • The PM emphasized the need for us to recognize the dangers presented by deepfakes to both society and individuals.

  • Clarifying India's stance, he stressed the importance of global collaboration in regulating AI.

  • He added that concerns about the misuse of AI are growing worldwide, and these must be addressed.

  • Lastly, Modi pointed out that it is important to ensure that AI is safe for society before making it widely accessible.

⭐What's the most important point here? The once-distant threat of AI deepfakes has quickly become very real, as rightly highlighted by the Indian PM. Many AI experts, politicians, and public figures worldwide have expressed concerns about the potential consequences of this in the upcoming 2024 elections.

Here, it is noteworthy that the tech industry's AI race has only sped up the release of more deepfake creation tools, and while major companies like Google, Meta, and Microsoft are now stepping up to prevent these tools from being misused to spread false information, it isn't a complete solution to the problem.
