OpenAI launches new initiative to ensure superintelligence is safe for humanity

📻Context of the News - OpenAI has discussed the potential risks of superintelligence, a hypothetical type of artificial intelligence that would be way more intelligent than any human. Superintelligence could solve problems that are currently beyond our capabilities, and it could even redesign the world in ways that we cannot even imagine.

However, superintelligence is just a concept as of now. Researchers are working to bring this to reality. But there is a risk that superintelligence could pose a severe threat to humanity if it is not aligned with human values.

📰News - Now, to address the anticipated risks from superintelligence, OpenAI has announced to work on solving the problem of superintelligence alignment.

This means that OpenAI would work to ensure that superintelligence is programmed to care about the well-being of others, work with humans to solve problems and respect the value of all life.

🧐What is OpenAI exactly doing?

  • The company is forming a new team that will be led by Ilya Sutskever, OpenAI's Chief Scientist, and Jan Leike, the head of alignment at the research lab.

  • OpenAI is also committing 20% of its compute power to the initiative, with the goal of developing an automated alignment researcher. An automated alignment researcher is a software program that would be able to identify potential risks posed by superintelligence and develop ways to mitigate those risks.

South Korea's AI chip dominance could help it become a top AI hub: Experts

☕News - South Korea's strong position in the memory chip market and its thriving AI ecosystem give it a competitive edge in the global AI chip race, according to industry experts.

In fact, the government is also supportive of the country's AI chip ambitions. In its "digital strategy," the South Korean government has set a goal of becoming one of the world's top three AI powerhouses by 2027.

🤔Do we have any South Korean companies leading the race though?

  • The country is home to two of the world's largest dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) chipmakers, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. These companies have been investing heavily in AI research and development, and are well-positioned to compete in the rapidly growing market for AI chips.

  • South Korea also has a strong local AI ecosystem, with companies like Naver and Kakao developing AI-powered products and services. This ecosystem provides a pool of talent and resources that can be tapped into by AI chipmakers.

😧What’s more? OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also encouraged South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol to make South Korea a leader in AI chip production during their meeting in June.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk praises China's AI progress and calls for regulation

☕News - Elon Musk, at a high-profile Chinese government-backed conference on Thursday, praised China's progress in AI research. He also believes that China can become a global leader in AI, which could have a major impact on the future economy and geopolitics.

“I admire the Chinese people’s wisdom and determination. As long as the Chinese people decide to do well in one thing, they will, including in AI,” he told the audience via video link.

Musk reiterated his stance that artificial intelligence will play a major role in the future, but he also warned that it needs to be regulated more carefully.

🤓Did he say anything about self-driving cars? Twitter-owner predicted that full self-driving technology should be available later this year. He also thinks that robots will outnumber humans in the future.

Well, Musk is eager to maintain a strong relationship with China. He has spoken out against the growing rift between Beijing and Washington, and he sees China as a key market for Tesla's future growth.
