China intensifies spying efforts to steal U.S. AI technology
♨️News - The FBI has cautioned about China's alleged plans to conduct large-scale cyber attacks globally by stealing AI technology from the United States.
According to reports, China is planning to use corporate espionage to steal AI technology from the companies developing it. Basically, corporate espionage means activities such as spying, hacking, or bribery to obtain trade secrets, confidential information or proprietary data.
😳Has China made such attempts before? The short answer is yes.
In 2018, Xiaolang Zhang, a former Apple employee, was arrested for attempting to travel to Beijing with stolen trade secrets related to self-driving vehicles.
Last year, U.S. firm Applied Materials sued Chinese company Mattson Technology, accusing a former employee of stealing trade secrets.
😵💫But why is China doing this? Earlier this year, Jen Easterly, the director of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Agency, stated that China might utilize its significant cyber capabilities in the event of a conflict in the Taiwan straits, suggesting a potential motive for China's actions.
🔍For context - The Taiwan Strait is a body of water that separates the island of Taiwan from mainland China. It is a significant point of geopolitical tension, with the dispute emerging from China's territorial claim over Taiwan, while Taiwan maintains its separate government.
Thus, because control over the Taiwan Strait is a geopolitical priority for China, obtaining advanced AI technology through espionage could enhance China's military capabilities, providing leverage in potential conflicts and strengthening its position in the region.
Moreover, the ongoing AI competition between the U.S. and China has worsened the situation.
AI expert cautions about the risks of revealing too much to ChatGPT
🤯News - An artificial intelligence expert has warned that sharing work complaints or political views with ChatGPT might have consequences for users.
🙀What are these "consequences"? AI Professor Mike Wooldridge from Oxford University advised against sharing personal information or engaging in intimate conversations with ChatGPT or any chatbot, deeming it "extremely unwise." This is because details of such interactions contribute to the training of future versions.
The professor stated that "anything you type into ChatGPT is just going to be fed directly into future versions of ChatGPT."
Additionally, he highlighted that due to the nature of AI models, retrieving your data becomes nearly impossible once it goes into the system, as retractions are not really an option if you later realize you've shared too much.
🥸What other insights did he share? Wooldrige pointed out that even though humans would like to see consciousness in AI models, it's important to remember that AI is devoid of both empathy and sympathy.
He explained that AI technology is fundamentally designed to echo users' preferences, with its primary function being to tell them what they want to hear. Therefore, users should not expect a balanced response, as the technology is simply doing what it has been trained to do.
