👨‍🔬News - Chinese scientists have developed the world’s first carbon-based microchip that can run AI tasks using a new approach called ternary logic. Unlike traditional chips that rely on just two states—zero and one—this chip adds a third state, making data processing faster and more efficient. 

The breakthrough, led by researchers from Peking University and Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, could lead to a new generation of computer chips that are quicker, use less energy, and overcome the limits of today’s silicon-based technology.

📖For context - The chip is made using carbon nanotubes (CNTs), tiny tubes created from graphene, a material known for its strength and excellent electrical properties. While CNTs are already used in batteries, they have the potential to replace silicon in computer chips. 

Compared to traditional chips, CNT-based chips could process data more efficiently while using less power. The use of ternary logic (which allows for three states instead of just two) means information can be handled in a smarter way without making circuits more complicated.

When tested, it was able to recognize handwritten numbers with 100% accuracy, showing its potential for AI applications. What makes Mistral OCR different is that it doesn’t just extract text—it also recognizes images and formatting, keeping the document’s structure intact. The output is organized in Markdown, a simple way of formatting text so it’s easier for AI models to understand.
