China is focusing to create stronger rules for generative AI models

👨‍💻News - The Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC), the country's internet regulator, is planning to require companies to obtain a license before releasing generative AI models.

The new regulations are a tightening of the draft regulations issued in April, which only required companies to register their products with the authorities after launch.

👵When will these regulations take effect? The licensing regime is part of regulations that are expected to be finalized as early as this month. It means that the regulations could take effect as soon as this month, but it is also possible that they will take effect later this year or even in early 2024.

The Chinese government is aware of the potential benefits of generative AI, but it is also concerned about the potential risks. The licensing regime is one way that the government is trying to balance these two competing interests.

👩‍⚖️But what did China’s draft regulation on AI entail? China’s draft rules published in April stated that AI content should adhere to core socialist values and avoid anything that could undermine the state, such as advocating the overthrow of the socialist system, inciting separatism, or undermining national unity.

UK's Labour Party to use AI to help people find jobs

🤵News - The Labour Party has announced plans to use artificial intelligence to help people find jobs, prepare their CVs, and receive payments faster.

Shadow work and pensions secretary Jonathan Ashworth said that the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) was wasting millions of pounds by not using cutting-edge technology.

💁‍♀️Labour would use AI in three particular areas -

• Job matching - The Labour Party would use AI to make more use of job-matching software. This software would use the data that the Department for Work and Pensions already has on people looking for work to pair them up more quickly with prospective employers. This would help people find jobs that are a good match for their skills and experience, and it would also help employers find qualified candidates more quickly.

• Claim processing - The party would also use AI to process claims more quickly. This would involve using algorithms to automate some of the tasks that are currently done manually, such as checking eligibility and verifying information. This would free up staff to focus on more complex cases, and it would also help to reduce the time it takes for people to receive their benefits.

• Fraud detection - Finally, the Labour Party would use AI to help identify fraud and errors in the system. This would involve using AI to analyze data for patterns that suggest fraudulent activity. It would help to protect the public purse and ensure that benefits are only paid to those who are entitled to them.

Experts discuss their progress in enabling robots to understand environment as humans do

👩‍⚖️News - To address robots' limitations in perceiving their environments, MIT experts have been conducting research for more than 3 years now.

In a recent interview, Luca Carlone and Jonathan How of MIT Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems (LIDS) revealed that their team had made significant progress in getting the number of robots to work together in order to generate 3D maps of the environment.

🧛‍♀️What’s the MIT team aiming at?

• As per the experts, the team is aiming to have robots create a consensus map of the world, rather than each robot creating its own independent map.

• A consensus map is a map that is created by multiple robots that have shared information with each other. This means that the robots have agreed on how the map should be updated.

👴Did the experts observe anything interesting in their experiment?

MIT researchers observed that when robots meet, they exchange information to improve their maps of the environment. This information can be used to correct the robots' trajectories and ensure that they are all on the same page about the environment. However, this information exchange can be challenging, as robots often have limited bandwidth.
