PLUS: Creators vs. AI: Senators Step In
Reading time: 5 minutes
Key Points
Strawberry “thinks” before responding, setting it apart from other conversational AIs that provide immediate answers.
The initial version of Strawberry will support only text.
☕News - OpenAI is expected to release a new reasoning-focused AI model, called "Strawberry," within the next two weeks as part of its ChatGPT service, according to two individuals who have tested it.
OpenTools first reported early details about Project Strawberry back in July. You can read that report here.
🤓Since then, here’s what we’ve learned:
Strawberry is different from other conversational AIs because it "thinks" before responding, rather than offering immediate answers.
While Strawberry will be part of ChatGPT, it is a standalone offering, but the exact details of how it will be offered are still unclear.
The initial version of Strawberry will only support text input and output, meaning it won’t be multimodal, as it won’t handle images, audio, or video at launch.
Key Points
Senators have urged FTC and DOJ to investigate if AI tools are unfairly impacting creators and publishers.
Dominant platforms like Google and Meta profit from content created by others, raising concerns about market manipulation.
If regulators can’t act, new legislation may be proposed to address AI's impact on content monetization.
♨️News - A group of Democratic senators, led by Amy Klobuchar, is calling on the FTC and Justice Department to look into whether AI tools that summarize and replicate online content, such as news and recipes, constitutes anticompetitive behavior.
🤔What’s at stake? In their letter, the senators argued that these new AI features are negatively impacting creators and publishers who are already struggling. They highlighted that dominant online platforms like Google and Meta are generating billions in ad revenue from content created by others.
They claim that these platforms control the market for monetizing original content and are manipulating it to their advantage. Creators are left with the choice to either allow their work to be used by AI or risk losing potential revenue. Consequently, the senators are urging the FTC and DOJ to investigate whether these practices constitute unfair competition or antitrust violations.
💁🏻♀️Why this was needed - Requesting regulatory action against problematic industry behaviors is a common step legislators take when crafting new laws. If the FTC and DOJ determine they cannot address the issue, it paves the way for the letter's signatories to propose new legislation. Although last year's "save-the-papers" bill was unsuccessful, a new bill addressing concerns about AI dominance might have a better chance of passing.
