🍳What’s cooking in the newsroom

Top 7 AI companies make a series of voluntary promises to protect users

👵🏻News - The White House has asked seven leading AI companies to make a series of voluntary commitments to protect users from the risks of artificial intelligence.

The companies — Amazon, Anthropic, Google, Inflection, Meta, Microsoft, and OpenAI — have all agreed to invest in cybersecurity, research on discrimination, and a new watermarking system that informs users when content was generated by AI.

👷🏻‍♂️What’s more? The companies have agreed to these commitments voluntarily, which means there are currently no consequences if they fail to meet their promises. Some of these commitments are not expected to be implemented immediately, but the companies are expected to start working on them right away.

The White House is concerned about the potential risks of AI, such as its use for malicious purposes, its potential to exacerbate discrimination, and its lack of transparency.

OpenAI introduces a custom instructions feature for ChatGPT

🕵🏻News - OpenAI has launched a new feature for ChatGPT called Custom Instructions. This feature will be helpful for users who need to set the same context frequently, as they can be set once and applied to every conversation with ChatGPT.

Custom Instructions are currently available to OpenAI Plus plan users, and won’t be available for people based out of the EU and the U.K.

👩🏻‍🎓What are some specific use cases of the feature?

  • Calibrate expertise - If you're an expert in a specific field, you can use Custom Instructions to tell ChatGPT about your expertise so that ChatGPT doesn't give you unnecessary explanations.

  • For example, if you're a doctor, you could tell ChatGPT that you're an expert in pediatrics. This would help ChatGPT to avoid giving you unnecessary explanations about basic medical concepts.

  • Personalize language learning - If you're learning a new language, you can use the new feature to tell the bot your level of proficiency. This will help ChatGPT to tailor its responses to your level of understanding.

AI could create new jobs in the video game industry, says TIGA

💁🏻‍♀️News - TIGA, a trade association representing the UK video game industry, believes that AI will lead to more jobs in the computer-based game sector.

Dr. Richard Wilson, the CEO of TIGA, said that AI can reduce the cost of making games and speed up the development process.

As per Wilson, AI can also be used to automate many of the routine tasks involved in game development, freeing up developers to focus on more creative and strategic work.

👨🏻‍🔬Is there any concern though? Some experts fear that as AI systems become more sophisticated, there is a growing risk that they could be used to exploit and manipulate gamers.

For example, AI could be used to create addictive or harmful game mechanics that encourage players to spend more time and money on gaming. AI could also be used to influence player behavior or emotions and collect personal data.
