Today we will discuss:

  • OpenAI's new Deep Research agent

  • New EU AI ban enforced

  • 10 must-try AI tools

Key Points

  • OpenAI’s new AI agent, Deep Research, helps users conduct in-depth, multi-source investigations directly within ChatGPT.

  • Deep Research responses take 5 to 30 minutes and include citations, summaries, and detailed reasoning for verification.

♨️News - OpenAI is rolling out a new AI agent called Deep Research, designed for people who need more than just quick answers from ChatGPT.

It’s built for professionals in fields like finance, science, policy, and engineering—anyone who relies on thorough, precise research. But OpenAI also sees it being useful for big personal decisions, like buying a car or home appliance because Deep Research digs through multiple sources to provide a more comprehensive analysis instead of just summarizing information.

✨How it works - Using Deep Research is straightforward: select the option in ChatGPT, enter a query, and (if needed) attach files or spreadsheets. Right now, it’s only available on the web, but OpenAI plans to bring it to mobile and desktop apps later this month.

Unlike regular ChatGPT responses, Deep Research takes time—anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes. Users will get a notification when their report is ready.

🧐What about accuracy? Since AI isn’t perfect, OpenAI is making accuracy a priority. Every Deep Research response comes with clear citations and a summary of its reasoning to make fact-checking easier. The tool runs on a special version of OpenAI’s o3 reasoning model, optimized for web browsing and data analysis.

In a test using Humanity’s Last Exam—an advanced benchmark designed to challenge AI—Deep Research achieved 26.6% accuracy, significantly outperforming competitors like Gemini Thinking (6.2%) and Grok-2 (3.8%).

🤓See also - Right now, Deep Research generates only text-based results, but OpenAI plans to add images, data visualizations, and other analytical tools. Future updates may also include access to specialized and subscription-based data sources.

👨‍💻Rollout plan - Deep Research is available now for ChatGPT Pro users, with a limit of 100 queries per month. Next up are Plus and Team users, followed by Enterprise. OpenAI expects to increase query limits soon but hasn’t provided a timeline for availability in the U.K., Switzerland, or the European Economic Area.

Key Points

  • EU regulators can now ban AI systems deemed to pose an ‘unacceptable risk,’ such as those involved in social scoring or decision manipulation.

  • Certain exemptions allow law enforcement to use biometric systems for targeted searches or preventing imminent threats to life.

☕News - As of Sunday, the European Union has granted regulators the power to ban AI systems deemed to pose an "unacceptable risk" or harm.

February 2 marks the first compliance deadline for the EU’s AI Act, a comprehensive regulatory framework approved by the European Parliament last March after years of development.

🕵️‍♂️What this means - The EU categorizes AI systems into four risk levels:

  1. Minimal risk (e.g., spam filters) faces no regulation.

  2. Limited risk (e.g., customer service chatbots) undergoes light oversight.

  3. High-risk AI (e.g., healthcare recommendations) faces heavy scrutiny.

  4. Unacceptable-risk AI — the focus of this month’s deadline — will be banned entirely.

The prohibited activities include social scoring, manipulating decisions subliminally, exploiting vulnerabilities, predicting crimes based on appearance, and unauthorized biometric data collection, among others. Companies using these banned systems in the EU could face fines of up to €35 million or 7% of their annual revenue, whichever is higher.

🤔Who gets an exemption? There are some exceptions built into the AI Act. For instance, law enforcement may use certain biometric systems in public spaces to conduct targeted searches, such as for an abduction victim, or to prevent serious, imminent threats to life. However, these actions require proper authorization.

Additionally, systems that infer emotions in workplaces or schools may be allowed if there is a medical or safety reason, like for therapeutic purposes.
