🍔What’s cooking in the newsroom

OpenAI temporarily removes the Browse feature from ChatGPT to fix content issues

📺News - On Tuesday, OpenAI announced that it had temporarily disabled the beta "Browse with Bing" feature on ChatGPT. In software development, beta is the second phase of software testing where software is released to a limited group of users outside the development team to test its efficiency.

🤔But why was this decision taken?

  • OpenAI found that the Browse feature could sometimes display content without permission. For example, if a user asked ChatGPT to "show me the full text of the Harry Potter book," the feature could display the entire book without permission from the copyright holder.

  • This would be a violation of copyright law and could harm the copyright holder by depriving them of potential revenue. Thus, OpenAI wants to fix this issue so that ChatGPT can better detect and avoid displaying copyrighted content without permission. Once they have fixed the issue, they will re-enable the feature.

🎃What’s more? OpenAI expressed its gratitude to ChatGPT Plus subscribers for providing valuable feedback. Well, users are split on OpenAI's decision to disable the Browse feature, with some praising the move as a necessary step to protect content creators and others decrying it as an unnecessary limitation on the tool's potential.

UK universities take steps to ensure responsible use of generative AI

👩‍💻News - 24 Russell Group universities have signed up to a code of conduct that outlines five guiding principles for the ethical use of generative AI in education.

The principles state that universities will support both students and staff to become AI literate, equip staff to help students use generative AI tools appropriately, adapt teaching and assessment to incorporate the ethical use of AI, ensure academic integrity is upheld, and share best practices as the technology evolves.

💁 What’s special about it?

  • While some have argued that generative AI could be used to facilitate cheating, the guidelines stress that students should be taught to use AI appropriately in their studies, while also making them aware of the risks of plagiarism, bias, and inaccuracy.

  • The guidelines also state that universities will review their academic conduct policies and guidance to reflect the emergence of generative AI.

The principles, developed in collaboration with experts in AI and education, are a stepping stone to a period of change in higher education that will be challenging but also promising.

UN Security Council to hold first-ever meeting on AI's impact on peace and security

🕵️‍♀️News - The United Nations Security Council will hold its first meeting on the potential threats of artificial intelligence to international peace and security. The meeting is being organized by the United Kingdom, which sees both great potential and major risks in AI.

The meeting will feature briefings by international AI experts and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who last month warned that the most advanced form of AI could pose an existential threat to humanity. Guterres has said that the alarm bells over AI are "deafening," and that the loudest voices are coming from the technology's developers.

The UN Security Council meeting on AI is likely to focus on the following:

  • The potential for AI to be used in autonomous weapons or in the control of nuclear weapons.

  • The risks of AI being used to spread disinformation or propaganda.

  • The potential for AI to be used to disrupt critical infrastructure or financial systems.

  • The risks of AI being used to discriminate against certain groups of people.

  • The need for a global framework to govern the development and use of AI.
