US Democrats form AI working group to shape policy on deepfakes and other risks

🤖News - Democrats in Congress have formed a new working group on artificial intelligence, with a focus on preventing deepfakes from harming individuals, national security, and the 2024 elections.

The working group will be chaired by Rep. Derek Kilmer, a member of the New Democrat Coalition. He expressed concern about the potential for AI-generated disinformation and misuse of advanced AI models. As per him, Congress should act quickly to address these issues.

👨‍🏫What would be the main focus of the working group? Lawmakers will focus on two key priorities: First, harnessing the potential of AI to benefit society, and second, ensuring that workers who are displaced by AI have the opportunity to retrain and find new jobs.

Meanwhile, Rep. Joe Morelle, another member of the New Dems working group, introduced legislation which would make it a crime to share deepfakes that show real people in fake, compromising situations.

The New Democrat Coalition's AI working group is the latest in a series of congressional study groups on artificial intelligence. This comes as debate over the AI risks has intensified on Capitol Hill and around the world.

UK government announces £4m AI funding in the fight against climate change

🕵️‍♂️News - The UK government has announced a new investment of £4 million in artificial intelligence to help industries cut their carbon emissions and reach net zero by 2050.

Twelve AI-powered projects will receive a share of £1 million to help decarbonize and increase renewable energy generation. The projects will utilize AI for a variety of purposes, from improving solar energy forecasting to decarbonizing dairy farming by monitoring crop and soil health with AI robots.

👨‍🎨What’s more? In addition to the £1 million for the 12 green AI initiatives, the government will provide £2.25 million for further AI innovations, with a focus on reducing emissions in energy sectors.

The UK government's Digital Catapult agency, which is part of Innovate UK and supports businesses in developing their ideas, has been awarded up to £500,000 to launch the UK's first Centre of Excellence for AI innovation in decarbonisation.

🧑‍💻What does Minister for Energy think? Lord Callanan, Minister for Energy Efficiency and Green Finance, said that the UK is a world leader in advanced AI and decarbonisation. He believes that the UK must continue to push the boundaries of AI technology to enhance its rapidly growing clean energy sector.

ChatGPT-4 promises to make content moderation less time-taking

🧑‍🎓Context of the News - Content moderation is the process of removing harmful or inappropriate content from social media platforms. This can be a difficult and time-consuming task, especially for large platforms with a lot of users.

🧑‍🏭News - Now, OpenAI has suggested that its GPT-4 model can enhance the operational efficiency of social media platforms by helping them moderate content more effectively.

The GPT-4 model can drastically reduce the time it takes to moderate content, from months to just hours. It can also ensure that content is labeled more consistently. Hence, social media giants like TikTok and Meta can reap a lot of benefits from its use.

👨‍🏫 How is that possible? Let's say a social media platform has to moderate 100,000 posts per day. If they only have human moderators, it would take a lot of time and resources to go through all of those posts and remove any that are harmful or inappropriate.

But if they use AI, they can automate some of the tasks, like identifying harmful content. This would free up human moderators to focus on the more complex tasks, like investigating reports of abuse and developing new content moderation policies.
