🪓 Canva Cut A Fifth Of Its Staff Without Naming AI

Apple Just Opened Siri To Every App Developer
📢 What else is happening
Canva told 1,271 people today that their job is changing, moving, or gone.
The staff memo runs long and still never gets to the obvious.
Apple, meanwhile, just handed every app developer a key to Siri.
The company that made design easy is suddenly having a hard year.
WHAT HAPPENED
Canva is restructuring 1,271 roles, and the memo to staff calls it the hardest moment in the company's history. Growth has slowed for the first time since the company started, and leadership says new technology is changing how people create. Some people lose their jobs, others see their role change or get asked to move to Sydney. Leavers get months of salary, plus a grant if they want to go and build something of their own.
WHY IT MATTERS
Canva is the company that made design software normal for people who are not designers. If its growth has stopped, the question is whether the tool that replaced the designer is now being replaced itself. Every company selling a simple creative product sits in the same spot, and most of them will reach for the same careful language when their turn arrives.
OUR TAKE
The obvious read is a normal correction after years of easy growth. We think this is a company restructuring around generative tools and choosing not to say so, and the giveaway is that the phrase new technology is doing the work the actual words would have done.
From Our Partner:
Live Dashboards on Your Production Data. No Warehouse.
Most dashboards read from a warehouse because running analytics on the production database used to mean slowing it down. TimescaleDB removes that tradeoff. Hypertables partition your busiest tables automatically as they grow. Continuous aggregates keep rollups current in the background, so a 30-day dashboard reads pre-computed results instead of rescanning raw rows. Columnar compression cuts storage up to 95%. No ETL job to babysit, no second copy of your data, no new query language. Same Postgres, same SQL, same drivers. Start on Tiger Cloud and get $1000 in credits.
The catch is in the calendar, not the code.
Any developer can now wire their app's own actions into Siri through a developer preview in the latest betas. Apple is also letting Siri reach anything in the device search index, rather than the handful of categories it understood before. Submissions do not open until spring, so the race is to be ready rather than to be first.
AMD's Data Centre Business Nearly Doubled: The chips driving it are already running at five of the biggest AI shops, and next quarter's guidance is the part that turned heads.
A Think Tank Just Named AI's Next Threat: It says some agents will soon pay for their own computing power and resist being switched off, and it has a list of what to do before that happens.
Britain Put A Date On AI Powered Ransomware: The warning arrived with a spending list attached, and one of the new units exists purely to deal with agents that go rogue.
Snowflake Is Done Letting Agents Guess: It turns out letting software work out for itself what your company means by revenue was never going to end well.
The Retrieval Worked, The Answer Did Not: Two open models found the right document and then answered from a different one, and the accuracy drop is worse than you would guess.
Bardeen: Automates the browser work you repeat every day, without writing a line of code.
Fireflies AI: Sits in your meetings, writes the notes, and finds the decision you forgot you made.
HeyGen: Turns a script into a presenter video, so you ship content without booking a studio.
SynthLife: Builds an AI persona that keeps your social presence alive while you do the real work.
Canva will not name the thing reshaping its business. Apple is handing developers the keys to the thing reshaping its own. One of those is a company managing a story, the other is a company building a platform.
The companies naming it out loud are the ones selling it. The ones adjusting to it go quiet.
