Mattel and OpenAI will launch their first AI-powered product later this year, with a focus on safe engagement.
The collaboration could enhance Mattelās growing entertainment business, including movies, games, and digital experiences based on toy brands.
āØļøNews - Mattel has entered into a partnership with OpenAI to explore generative AI in toys, games, and entertainment.
This marks OpenAIās first collaboration with a toymaker, expanding its reach beyond news and enterprise partnerships.
šµļøāāļøWhatās the scoop? Details are still limited but Mattel and OpenAI plan to launch their first AI-powered product later this year, aimed at enhancing fan engagement in a way that is both thoughtful and secure.
Mattel stressed that safety privacy and security are key to the partnership. Employees will also get access to tools like ChatGPT Enterprise to support their creative process. Josh Silverman, Mattelās chief franchise officer made it clear that while Mattel is enabling OpenAI to use its IP it will not relinquish control. He said the product range will span physical items and new experiences.
š¤But why is Mattel turning to generative AI now? For Mattel, working with OpenAI could help enhance its entertainment division by bringing fresh tech into beloved franchises. Following the massive success of the Barbie movie in 2023, Mattel has been busy developing films based on other properties like Hot Wheels, Polly Pocket, Barney, UNO, and Masters of the Universe.
They are also expanding into digital gaming, with plans to publish their first in-house game in 2026, according to their first-quarter earnings report. Bringing AI into the mix could revolutionize the way these stories are created and experienced by fans.
Mattel sees AI as a way to inspire fans, improve creative ideation and continue leading innovation. Whether itās a more interactive Barbie or faster smarter storytelling tools, the next generation of play is on its way.
