US lawmakers want humans to control nuclear weapons, not AI

👨🏽‍🚀News - Several US lawmakers have proposed amendments to the 2024 defense policy bill that would require the Pentagon to put in place a system that ensures meaningful and ethical use of AI in defense and military.

House Republicans are expected to start deciding next week which of the more than 1,300 proposed amendments to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) will be voted on by the House.

Who introduced the most recent amendment though?

  • Rep. Ted Lieu, D-Calif., has introduced the most recent amendment in response to concerns that AI systems could be used to launch nuclear weapons without human authorization. His amendment demands humans have the final say in the use of nuclear weapons.

  • The lawmakers argue that it is essential to put in place safeguards to prevent AI from being used to launch nuclear weapons. They say that the current system, which relies on human operators to make the final decision to launch, is not enough to guarantee that humans will always be in control.

👩🏼‍🔧Does the amendment have enough support?

Rep. Ted Lieu’s amendment is being supported by several other lawmakers, including GOP Reps. Juan Ciscomani of Arizona and Zachary Nunn of Iowa, along with Democrats Chrissy Houlahan of Pennsylvania, Seth Moulton of Massachusetts, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, and Don Beyer of Virginia.

AI to generate £400bn for UK economy by 2030, Google predicts

📻News - A new report by Google has found that artificial intelligence has the potential to "turbocharge" the UK economy. The report, which was produced alongside public policy research agency Public First, estimates that AI could boost the UK economy by £400 billion by 2030. This would be equivalent to an annual growth rate of 2.6%.

😎What’s more? The report also estimates that generative AI could save the average UK worker over 100 hours per year. This would amount to 700,000 hours per year of administrative work for UK GPs and teachers.

The report comes at a time when concerns about the potential impact of disruptive AI technology on privacy, education, industry, and jobs are growing.

🤔What does an insider think? Debbie Weinstein, the UK, and Ireland boss of Google, said that the transformation brought about by AI in the tech industry is the most profound platform shift that any of us have experienced.

She added that while some jobs are likely to be lost to AI, there will also be a "whole new set of jobs that will be created". Weinstein said that Google is focused on "upskilling" workers to ensure they can benefit from AI.

Honeybee brains could inspire new AI breakthroughs, say experts

☕News - Scientists at the University of Sheffield are studying how honeybees make quick decisions to improve artificial intelligence systems and devices.

In their experiment, the researchers found that honeybees were able to learn to associate different colors with the presence or absence of food. The honeybees were also able to make quick and accurate decisions within seconds.

🧐 What’s so special about it? The researchers believe that this research could help to develop AI systems that are more efficient and robust. They say that the findings could be used to design robots and autonomous machines that can think like bees, which are some of the most efficient navigators in the natural world.

😦What are the additional benefits of the research on honeybee brains?

  • It could help us to better understand how the brain works. This could lead to new insights into human cognition and behavior.

  • The research, in some ways, could also help us to develop new treatments for brain disorders.

  • Furthermore, it can help us to create more efficient and effective learning systems.
