AI as a cure for loneliness - An insider's take
๐๐ปโโ๏ธContext of the news - While Hollywood films have often highlighted the dangers of relationships with artificial intelligence, one computer scientist believes we're overlooking the benefits these relationships can offer.
๐คNews - Tony Prescott, a professor of cognitive robotics at the University of Sheffield, suggests that AI can help combat human loneliness.
He compares AI relationships to the bonds we form with pets or the way children play with dolls, arguing that we should recognize the potential comforts AI can provide to adults.
๐Prescott's Theory - In his new book, The Psychology of Artificial Intelligence, Prescott wrote that "In an age when many people describe their lives as lonely, there may be value in having AI companionship as a form of reciprocal social interaction that is stimulating and personalised."
Prescott noted that loneliness often leads to a downward spiral of isolation and low self-esteem, discouraging further interaction. He believes that AI companionship could break this cycle by boosting self-worth and improving social skills through practicing conversations and interactions, ultimately helping individuals find companionship with humans again.

South Korea's AI chip dominance could help it become a top AI hub: Experts
โNews - South Korea's strong position in the memory chip market and its thriving AI ecosystem give it a competitive edge in the global AI chip race, according to industry experts.
In fact, the government is also supportive of the country's AI chip ambitions. In its "digital strategy," the South Korean government has set a goal of becoming one of the world's top three AI powerhouses by 2027.
๐คDo we have any South Korean companies leading the race though?
The country is home to two of the world's largest dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) chipmakers, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. These companies have been investing heavily in AI research and development, and are well-positioned to compete in the rapidly growing market for AI chips.
South Korea also has a strong local AI ecosystem, with companies like Naver and Kakao developing AI-powered products and services. This ecosystem provides a pool of talent and resources that can be tapped into by AI chipmakers.
