👩🍳What’s cooking in the newsroom?
After chips, U.S. considers limiting export of AI software to China
♨️News - The Biden administration is considering new regulations to safeguard U.S. AI technology from China. These regulations would restrict the export of proprietary or closed-source AI models, such as the core software used in systems like ChatGPT, to China.
👨🏻🏫For context - Currently, there are no restrictions preventing U.S. AI giants like OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Anthropic from selling their powerful closed-source AI models worldwide without government oversight. This has prompted concerns from both government and private sector researchers, who believe that these models could be used by U.S. adversaries for aggressive cyber attacks or even to develop potent biological weapons.
🧐So what are they planning to do? According to sources, the U.S. is considering implementing export controls on AI models based on a threshold outlined in an AI executive order issued last October. This threshold is determined by the amount of computing power required to train a model and could be used to determine which AI models would be subject to export restrictions.
However, even if this threshold is adopted, it is likely to only affect the export of models that have not yet been released, as it is believed that none have reached the threshold yet.
DeepMind's latest AlphaFold model is more useful for drug discovery
👨🏻🔬News - Google DeepMind has unveiled an improved version of its AI model, AlphaFold, which can predict the structure of not only proteins but also all types of molecules found in living organisms.
This new model, AlphaFold 3, will aid researchers across multiple fields, including medicine, agriculture, materials science, and drug development, by providing them with a more efficient way to test potential discoveries.
🔬How does it compare to its predecessors? Previous versions of AlphaFold could only predict the structures of proteins. However, AlphaFold 3 can now model DNA, RNA, and smaller molecules called ligands, expanding its scientific applications.
Additionally, according to DeepMind, this new version is 50 percent better at figuring out these shapes compared to its predecessors.
🧬Real-world application - AlphaFold 3 comes with a library of molecular structures. Researchers can input a list of molecules they want to combine, and AlphaFold 3 uses a diffusion method to create a 3D model of the new structure. This diffusion method is similar to the one used by AI image generators like Stable Diffusion to assemble photos.
According to DeepMind, Isomorphic Labs, a drug discovery company founded by DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, has been using AlphaFold 3 for internal projects. The model has already helped Isomorphic Labs enhance its understanding of new disease targets.
Microsoft and LinkedIn's Work Trend Index reveals how the BYOAI trend is reshaping the workplace
📓News - Microsoft, in collaboration with LinkedIn, has just released its fourth annual Work Trend Index, shedding light on the current state of the labor market. This year's report, unsurprisingly, zoomed in on how AI is reshaping the workplace.
🤩So what's the most fascinating insight?
One standout finding is that employees, feeling overwhelmed by the pace of work, are taking matters into their own hands. They're incorporating AI tools into their daily tasks without waiting for approval from their employers, essentially adopting a "ask for forgiveness, not permission" approach.
What's even more intriguing is that this trend, known as Bring Your Own AI to Work (BYOAI), isn't confined to a specific age group—it's being embraced by workers across the board.
😺As a result -
75% of workers now use AI at work, claiming that the technology saves them time, boosts creativity, and allows them to focus on their most important work.
This marks a significant increase of nearly 30 percentage points from six months ago, indicating a rapid adoption of AI within organizations.
Moreover, those who use AI a lot are saving over 30 minutes every single day! And almost all of them agree that it makes their workload more manageable and their work more enjoyable.
