UK competition watchdog warns of big tech's tightening grip on AI market

☕News - The UK's antitrust regulator has cautioned that the AI investments made by major companies like Google, Apple, and Microsoft need closer examination due to concerns that these investments could be used to solidify their dominance in the market.

The Competition and Markets Authority said that they have identified a network of interconnected partnerships and investments among these companies, suggesting that they could manipulate the market to serve their own interests.

🥴Where's this coming from? The CMA's statements about this trend stem from a review of AI foundation models, which revealed competition issues in the swiftly evolving market.

Reflecting on their findings, Sarah Cardell, CEO of the CMA, emphasized the risks associated with major US tech companies investing in promising AI startups, pointing out that these investments not only involve financial backing but also gaining strategic access to crucial infrastructure. For example, Microsoft, a key investor in OpenAI, has also funded Mistral and recently absorbed a significant portion of Inflection AI's team.

🤷🏻‍♂️What's the solution? Over the next few months, the CMA plans to evaluate the market and might use existing merger and investigation reviews for intervention. Furthermore, it is contemplating whether to integrate this behavior into its newly granted authority under the Digital Markets, Competition, and Consumers Bill, set to be enforced this summer.
