OpenAI and Microsoft's partnership is strained due to financial pressures and disagreements on AI development rules.
A contract clause could cut Microsoft off from OpenAI's tech if OpenAI develops artificial general intelligence (AGI).
♨️News - The once-strong partnership between OpenAI and Microsoft appears to be showing cracks, according to a detailed report by The New York Times.
The five-year collaboration, which began with high hopes, has cooled due to a combination of financial pressures on OpenAI, limitations in computing power provided by Microsoft, and fundamental disagreements on AI development rules. This strain comes at a crucial moment as both companies aim to lead in the increasingly competitive AI space.
🫣A sneaky clause? Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of the report is a clause in OpenAI’s contract with Microsoft. This clause would cut off Microsoft's access to OpenAI’s technology if OpenAI develops artificial general intelligence (AGI)—an AI system capable of human-like thinking.
The clause is designed to prevent Microsoft from potentially misusing the powerful technology. However, the timeline for AGI’s arrival remains vague.
🔨The final nail? OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has previously acknowledged the ambiguity surrounding AGI. He stated that determining when AGI has truly arrived will likely be a subjective process. The line between advanced AI and AGI, he suggested, may be much blurrier and more gradual than anticipated, adding further complexity to the companies' evolving relationship.

X’s updated Privacy Policy allows third-party collaborators to use user data for AI training unless users opt out.
However, users have no clear way to opt out of data sharing just yet.
☕News - On Wednesday, X announced changes to its Privacy Policy that allow third-party “collaborators” to use user data for training AI models unless you opt out.
This follows an investigation by the EU's lead privacy regulator into Elon Musk’s use of X data for the xAI Grok AI chatbot. It seems X is looking to follow in the footsteps of platforms like Reddit, eyeing user data licensing as a new way to boost revenue.
😵💫Here’s where it gets tricky - There’s no clear way for users to opt out at this point. The policy points to the settings page but doesn’t specify how to turn off data-sharing. Right now, the “Privacy and safety” section lets you manage sharing with xAI’s Grok and some business partners, but it doesn’t address third-party AI companies. You might have to wait until the policy takes effect on November 15 to see if an opt-out option will be added.
🫠What's more? X has changed how it handles data retention, stating it will keep user information for different lengths of time based on legal needs and service requirements. They also noted that even if you delete public content from X, it could still be out there, potentially in the hands of AI providers or search engines.
