AI announcements to expect from Apple's WWDC 2024

☕News - Apple's much-awaited Worldwide Developers Conference starts next week. With the event approaching, numerous leaks have surfaced regarding what iOS 18 and its rumored AI-powered apps and features might include. Here's an overview of some of them:

  • Siri is set for an AI overhaul. Using Apple's large language models to control individual app features, it will be able to perform tasks like deleting emails or editing photos. Siri's improvements will also extend to Apple Watch, enabling on-the-go use and remote control of other devices. Additionally, Siri will feature more natural-sounding voices and will be able to summarize notifications involving people, companies, events, locations, dates, and more.

  • Safari will incorporate more AI features, including an Intelligent Search function that offers AI summaries of web pages and news articles.

  • Apple Photos is getting a makeover with a new interface and AI-powered photo retouching capabilities. A "Clean Up" feature, for example, will enable users to remove objects from photos using generative AI technology, similar to Google's Magic Eraser. Apple has also developed an internal app named Generative Playground, employing genAI for image creation and editing. How this functionality will be integrated for end-users remains unclear, but iMessage integration has been spotted in the form of an app extension.

  • Notes will soon feature AI capabilities, enabling users to request AI summaries. The update will also enable in-app audio recording and transcription. Math Notes will assist users in creating graphs and solving equations by recognizing mathematical text and providing solutions. Users may also have the ability to enable auto-completion for their mathematical equations as they type.

  • iMessages is introducing Generative AI emojis for personalized creations and AI recaps of missed texts. Deeper integration with Siri, new Tapback icons, and support for message effects on individual words are anticipated. Additionally, suggested replies powered by Apple’s on-device Ajax LLM aim to simplify texting. RCS support is also expected, offering read receipts, typing indicators, and high-quality media exchange when texting Android users via iMessage.

🤭What's more?

  • Apple Music could rival Spotify by introducing its own AI-powered auto-generated playlists.

  • Apple is developing "Enhanced" notifications, which will include AI summaries of missed notifications.

  • Apple's LLM will now communicate with the Calendar app to check for events when composing messages.

  • Voice Memos will offer real-time transcription capabilities.

  • Mail will also feature suggested email replies generated by Ajax.

X updates policy to formally allow AI-generated adult content

♨️News - X is now allowing users to share NSFW content generated by AI, but only under certain conditions.

The content must be consensually produced and clearly labeled as adult material. It also can't be displayed prominently on profiles or banners. This means pictures, videos, and even AI-generated pornography are allowed, but only if users follow these new guidelines.

📋X's new adult content policy emphasizes two key ideas:

  1. Freedom of Expression: Adults should have the freedom to create and share sexual content, as long as it's produced with consent. This includes both visual and written forms, which can be a legitimate way to express oneself.

  2. User Autonomy: Adults have the right to choose the content they consume and create, reflecting their own beliefs and desires related to sexuality.

However, it balances this by protecting children and users who prefer not to see such content. The new policy requires creators to mark the NSFW content with a warning that restricts access. This means only users who confirm they're 18 or older (by providing a birth date) will be able to see the content.

In addition, the platform maintains a strict stance against content that is:

  • Excessively gory.

  • Depicts or glorifies sexual violence.

  • Exploits or sexualizes minors.

🌟For context - Elon Musk, a self-proclaimed champion of free speech, has loosened content rules on X (formerly Twitter) ever since he took over. This includes:

  • Allowing communities for potentially offensive content (NSFW).

  • Hiding "likes" to make it easier to engage with controversial posts without fear of judgment.

That being so, this latest move aligns with his past efforts, and could potentially further his goal of turning X into an "everything app," similar to China's WeChat.

👨🏻‍💻Prompt engineering tips

  • Leverage Pre-Defined Prompts: Use or modify existing prompts known to work well, such as "Explain like I'm five" for simplified explanations.

  • Role Play: Assign the AI a role to play for more engaging and context-specific responses. Example: “As a career counselor, what advice would you give to someone switching careers at 40?”

  • Ask Direct Questions: Direct questions often yield more focused answers. Example: “What are the health benefits of eating avocados?" instead of "Talk about avocados.”
