Apple steps into AI search with new ChatGPT-style Answer Engine

āØļøNews ā Apple has formed a new team to build its own answer engine, a move that signals its long-overdue push into generative AI search. The project aims to reduce Appleās reliance on Google and improve Siriās weak performance in handling queries.
šØāš»Fast facts ā
Apple Intelligence currently lacks any real search function and defers many questions to ChatGPT or Google.
The new AKI (Answers, Knowledge and Information) team is led by Robby Walker, a former Siri exec.
A standalone answer engine app and improved backend infrastructure are now in development.
The move comes as DOJ may force changes to Appleās $20B-a-year deal with Google, threatening a key revenue stream.
Meanwhile, Apple also is exploring partnerships, including with Perplexity.
š¤OpenTools POV ā Appleās slow move into AI-powered search shows just how disruptive ChatGPT has been. With its Google deal under threat and Siri lagging, Appleās hand is finally being forced.

āNews ā Generative AI tools like ChatGPT are eating into traditional search traffic, costing news publishers valuable clicks, ad revenue, and subscriptions. As AI-generated summaries increasingly answer usersā questions directly, media outlets are left scrambling to adapt before theyāre pushed out of the discovery ecosystem altogether.
šØāš»Fast facts ā
AI summaries in Google search cut click-through rates by about half.
Publishers are losing ad revenue and subscription leads due to declining traffic.
Some media outlets, like Boston Globe, are seeing limited subscriptions via ChatGPT.
Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) is emerging as a survival tactic, replacing SEO.
15% of under-25s now use generative AI as a news source, raising credibility concerns.
š¤OpenTools POV ā This shift isnāt just about algorithms, itās about who controls access to trustworthy information. As AI becomes the new front page of the internet, publishers need to rethink not just how they're found, but how they're valued.
