WHAT HAPPENED
Tim Cook's final day as CEO was August 31, fifteen years after he took over two months before Steve Jobs died. John Ternus takes the role today. He joined Apple in 2001 on the product design team and has run hardware engineering since 2021. Cook becomes executive chairman and told Ternus he will keep managing Apple's relationships with President Trump and the Chinese government. Ternus gets Cook's office and, on September 9, his first keynote, where a foldable iPhone Ultra and the iPhone 18 Pro are expected.
WHY IT MATTERS
Cook's Apple was a supply chain and a services business wrapped around a phone, and he was the best operator the industry has ever had. Ternus is a hardware engineer inheriting the company at the exact moment the industry decided the value moved to software. Apple is the only company of its size without a frontier model of its own, it has just pushed through unpopular price increases across hardware and subscriptions, and it has spent three years being described as late. The detail worth noticing is what Cook kept. The new CEO gets the products. The old one keeps Washington and Beijing.
OUR TAKE
Apple has never handed the company to a hardware engineer at a moment when hardware stopped being the argument. That is either exactly the wrong resume for this decade or exactly the right one, and the second story in today's edition suggests it might be the right one.
Watch the September 9 keynote for one thing. Whether Apple presents its AI as a product or as a feature will tell you more about the next five years than any spec on the stage.

Against what developers actually have today it is a 17% reduction, because the temporary 50% boost running until September 13 disappears when the new limits land on September 14. Users did the arithmetic in public, and Anthropic deleted its original post and reposted it with a line stating the reduction plainly. Sonnet 5 API pricing also moved from $2 and $10 per million tokens to $3 and $15 on Sunday.
