Anthropic wins key ruling on copyright and AI training

☕News – A U.S. judge has sided with Anthropic in a key AI copyright case, saying that using copyrighted books to train AI models can qualify as fair use. This is the first time a court has clearly backed this argument in the context of generative AI.

• The ruling came from Judge William Alsup in the case Bartz v. Anthropic. 

• He said using copyrighted content to train models may fall under fair use. 

• It does not mean the case is over, only that fair use is a valid argument. 

• A full trial is still set to examine if Anthropic used pirated books. 

• The decision could influence how other AI copyright cases play out.
