WHAT HAPPENED
Akamai announced a seven year, $11.6 billion contractual commitment from Anthropic for access to Akamai Cloud's distributed AI infrastructure, with room to expand by up to $9 billion more, which would take the total near $20 billion. Alongside it, Anthropic received a warrant for up to roughly 5% of Akamai's common stock, 7.7 million shares on an as converted basis, at an exercise price of $111.33. About 2% vests against the $11.6 billion already committed, and the remaining 3% vests in 1% steps for every further $3 billion of services bought. Akamai says the committed portion carries about $5.5 billion of capital expenditure, roughly $1.7 billion of it landing in 2026 on supply chain components including memory. Co-founder and chief executive Tom Leighton said Anthropic is advancing the AI revolution and that Akamai was thrilled to be chosen, and the deal sits on top of $2.8 billion of cloud infrastructure commitments Akamai has announced across its customer base this year.
WHY IT MATTERS
The warrant is the part that changes the shape of the market. Anthropic is not simply renting capacity; it is being paid in equity to show up, and because the vesting runs on spend, every additional $3 billion it sends Akamai buys another 1% of its own supplier. That turns a cost line into a position, and it gives a customer reason to want its vendor's share price to rise rather than its rates to fall. Cloud contracts used to be the thing a lab negotiated hardest on. The ones being signed now read more like the lab underwriting a supplier it needs to keep existing.
OUR TAKE
The obvious read is that Akamai bought a marquee customer with dilution. We think Anthropic bought the harder thing, a supplier that cannot afford to lose it, and the giveaway is that the warrant vests on spend rather than on time. A vendor whose equity story depends on one customer's invoices does not get to raise the rate.
Watch the expansion, not the headline. If Anthropic has not triggered at least the first $3 billion tranche by the end of 2027, the warrant was a discount wearing a partnership costume, and the $20 billion ceiling was never a real number.

Oracle says Jupiter remains on its planned schedule. Blue Owl Capital, whose subsidiary manages the construction, says the notice does not change its financial commitments to the project.
