Anthropic is handing over a slice of itself weeks before it goes public. Microsoft walked out of a British data centre it had already signed for. And Meta says a Claude tool silenced a protest group.

The money goes out before the company has even gone public.

WHAT HAPPENED

Anthropic said on Sunday it will put 5% of its shares into a new fund meant to deal with the damage artificial intelligence does to people's livelihoods. Shareholders have to approve it first. The fund will be a company Anthropic owns rather than a charity, and it is barred from spending anything on politics or lobbying. Anthropic says it will make large donations to nonprofits, and in some cases pay people directly.

WHY IT MATTERS

Every large lab has spent two years saying the job losses are somebody else's problem to solve. This is the first one to put its own stock behind the claim, which turns a talking point into a number anyone can check. It also sets a floor that every rival will now be asked why it has not matched.

OUR TAKE

The obvious read is a company trying to look like the responsible one before it lists. We think it is buying something more specific, and the giveaway is what the fund is forbidden to do. It cannot spend a cent on politics or lobbying. You write that line in when you expect to be accused of buying influence, which tells you the fight being headed off is about whether this is charity or positioning.

Watch the shareholder vote. If it passes with the full stake intact before the listing, Anthropic has decided the signal is worth real money. If the number shrinks, or the vote slides past the offering, this was a press release with a condition attached.

The grid said the 2030s. The building was promised for next year.

Microsoft has pulled out of using a two billion pound artificial intelligence data centre being built in Essex, after the local electricity network told the developer that enough power will not arrive until the early 2030s. The site was due to open next year and hold tens of thousands of Nvidia chips. Its developer says it is still committed and is hunting for another customer, weeks before it tries to list its shares in New York.

Meta will not say who was running the tool.

Meta suspended the Instagram account of the No Kings coalition during a day of nationwide protests, then said the block was set off by a Claude tool reading the group's profile, posts and tags in heavy bursts. The account was gone for about ninety minutes while the events ran, and its administrators lost access for hours after it came back. On the day itself, Meta had given a different explanation.

🔌 MCP CORNER

THREE SERVERS WORTH WIRING UP THIS WEEK.

An MCP server plugs your assistant into another app, so it stops describing the work and starts doing it.

  1. Atlassian MCP Server: Opens your tickets and project docs to your assistant, so the status update writes itself.

  2. Google Analytics MCP: Lets your assistant read your own traffic, so you ask the question instead of building the report.

  3. Agent Browser MCP: Gives your agent a real browser, so it finishes the form instead of telling you where to find it.

⚡️ YOUR MOVE

FOR PEOPLE BUILDING THE LIFE THEY WANT, NOW.

  • 💼 American cybersecurity job postings fell about 26% through September, to roughly 236,000, while demand for people who secure AI systems rose 268%. The field is not shrinking, it is moving, and the title that is growing barely existed two years ago. → Point your next move at it

  • 🛒 Walmart's chief executive published a promise this weekend that its digital shelf labels will not move prices by weather, time of day or who you are. Maryland, New Jersey and Connecticut have now written limits on using your own data to set your price, and lawmakers in at least 30 states looked at pricing bills this year. → See what you are paying

  • 🧠 Nvidia's processor team says the industry chased core counts for a decade and gave up single thread speed to get them, and agent workloads are forcing that back. It claims up to twice the speed of the leading x86 chips on agent work, because fast sequential work is what keeps an expensive graphics chip busy. → Read the interview

  • 🔐 Anthropic has absorbed Opaque Systems, the team behind several open tools for running AI over sensitive data, and Opaque is winding down. If your stack leans on its agent governance toolkit or its confidential connector work, this is the week to plan the replacement. → Check your dependency

  • OpenAI Confirmed It Is Building A Humanoid Robot – Sam Altman said the company will build one and told Fortune to expect a demo in 2027, while calling the body the easier half of the problem and the software that has to see, plan and correct itself the real one.

  • Tenstorrent Raised $1.5 Billion – The chip company run by Jim Keller more than doubled its value to $6.2 billion, with Morgan Stanley, Fidelity, ARK Invest and T. Rowe Price in the round, and says the money goes into server production, open chip research and hiring.

  • An Australian Data Centre Firm Halted Its Own Shares – NextDC stopped trading in its stock pending an update on a power supply delay at its Melbourne site, which analysts at Citi think could put about 25 million Australian dollars of next year's operating earnings at risk.

  1. MurfAI: Reads your script aloud in a voice you would not be embarrassed to publish.

  2. Bardeen: Does the twelve clicks you make every morning while you do something better.

  3. Taskade: Turns the thing you said in a meeting into a task with an owner on it.

  4. VEED: Cuts and captions your video without making you learn an editor first.

Three stories about who gets handed the bill. Anthropic worked out that the damage is coming and tried to put a price on it before anyone else did. Microsoft looked at a grid that cannot deliver and handed the problem back to the company holding the lease. And Meta, asked why a protest group went dark, pointed at a tool somebody else built. None of this is denial. It is delivery, and the parcel keeps moving.

Work out who is holding yours.
