Michigan joins state-level effort to regulate AI political advertisements
📰News - Michigan is taking steps to prevent people from using artificial intelligence and manipulated media to spread false information during elections. This development unfolds as the U.S. government is still discussing how to regulate these technologies nationwide.
Campaigns to be aired in Michigan state will be required to clearly reveal which political advertisements were created using artificial intelligence. Well, the new legislation is expected to be signed in the coming days by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat. New rules will ban AI-made deepfakes within 3 months of elections unless they're clearly labeled as fake.
🧐Why was this step necessary?'
There are increasing concerns that generative AI will be used in the 2024 election to mislead voters and impersonate candidates on a scale and at a speed not yet seen.
Violations of the proposed legislation could result in misdemeanor charges, carrying a maximum penalty of 93 days imprisonment, a $1,000 fine, or both. The attorney general or the candidate affected by the deceptive media could seek redress through the appropriate circuit court.
Several states, including California, Minnesota, Texas, and Washington, have already enacted regulations to curtail deepfakes in political campaigns. Similar measures have been proposed in Illinois, Kentucky, New Jersey, and New York.
In August, the Federal Election Commission took a procedural step toward potentially regulating AI-generated deepfakes in political ads under its existing rules. Meanwhile, social media companies also have announced some guidelines meant to mitigate the spread of harmful deepfakes.

Management consultants in the UK to be most impacted by AI, study finds
🗞️News - A new report from the UK's Department for Education's Unit for Future Skills has found that Generative AI (GAI) is likely to have a significant impact on the UK job market, particularly in the finance and insurance sectors.
The report, which is one of the first attempts to quantify the impact of Gen AI on the UK labor market, found that jobs in management consulting and business analysis are most at risk of being automated by Generative Artificial Intelligence. Workers in London and the South East of England are also more likely to be affected by GAI than those in other parts of the country.
😵What’s more? As per the report, GAI is more likely to automate tasks in professional occupations than in jobs that are manual in nature and require less education. However, this new technology is likely to play a complementary role to human workers, rather than replacing them entirely.
The same tone was heard in a recent report from the International Labour Organization (ILO), which stated that GAI is likely to automate some tasks but is not expected to lead to mass job losses.
Lastly, the UK's report called for a reskilling of the workforce to prepare for the impact of Gen AI. It also suggests that workers should focus on developing skills in areas such as data analysis, coding, and problem-solving.
