Key Points

  • Altmanā€™s World project aims to link AI agents to verified digital identities of humans using blockchain-based IDs.

  • Worldā€™s blockchain-based verification system will certify that AI agents are acting on behalf of real individuals.

šŸ—žļøContext of the News - Sam Altmanā€™s OpenAI made waves last week with the launch of Operator, the companyā€™s first AI agent capable of acting autonomously on the web. While the debut sparked significant attention, itā€™s part of a much larger narrative shaping Altmanā€™s vision for the future of AI. His other venture, World, is taking on an equally complex challenge: how to verify online interactions in a world where distinguishing between humans and AI agents is becoming increasingly difficult.

ā˜•News - World, a web3 project by Altman and Alex Blaniaā€™s Tools for Humanity, is planning tools to connect AI agents with verified human identities. The idea revolves around ā€œproof of humanā€ technology, which uses a biometric scan to assign users a unique blockchain ID. This ID could certify that an AI agent is acting on behalf of a real person.

šŸ§What's their plan? World wants to license AI agents to act on behalf of verified users. According to Tiago Sada, Worldā€™s chief product officer, this is a natural progression of the projectā€™s mission. Instead of focusing solely on verifying humans, World aims to confirm that AI agents interacting online represent real people. This could expand the role of World IDs to help individuals securely manage a network of AI agents.

šŸ¤”Potential challenges - Many websites currently block AI bots, including OpenAIā€™s Operator. However, Sada predicts businesses will reconsider, especially when agents are verified as acting on behalf of real people. OpenAIā€™s recent partnerships with platforms like Uber, Instacart, and DoorDash show early signs of this shift, with Operator gaining access to these services.

šŸ¤“Final thoughts - Altmanā€™s projects might seem scattered, but they reflect a unified vision for the future of AI. As AI agents become more integrated into online spaces, tools like Worldā€™s verification system could play a crucial role in ensuring trust, transparency, and human oversight in digital interactions.

Key Points

  • The Chinese startupā€™s AI assistant dethrones OpenAIā€™s ChatGPT in US App Store downloads.

  • DeepSeekā€™s success has raised questions about the sustainability of compute-heavy AI investments, shaking up the market.

ā™ØļøNews - DeepSeek, a Chinese AI startup, has managed to shoot its chatbot to the top of the Apple App Store in the US, knocking OpenAIā€™s ChatGPT off the top spot.

Notably, this AI assistant is powered by DeepSeekā€™s open-source models, which are not only cheaper to develop but also require a fraction of the computing power of the big players like OpenAI.

āŖFor those who missed the buzz - DeepSeekā€™s new R1 reasoning model, which dropped on January 20. Itā€™s designed to solve complex problems and is reportedly on par with OpenAIā€™s GPT-4 and Anthropicā€™s Claude 3.5 Sonnet ā€” all for a fraction of the cost.

DeepSeek claims to have developed R1 for less than $6 million, while OpenAIā€™s GPT-4 is said to have cost over $100 million. Whatā€™s more impressive? DeepSeek only needed about 2,000 Nvidia chips to train their model, compared to the 16,000 or more typically used by top models.

āš”Shaking up the AI market - The release of DeepSeekā€™s new model and the resulting growth of the app has shaken financial markets, with Nvidiaā€™s stock dropping over 12% in pre-market trading. With the new model reportedly costing under $6 million to develop, compared to OpenAIā€™s $100 million for GPT-4, some investors are questioning whether the massive investments in data centers and compute-heavy models are still worth it.

Meanwhile, major players like OpenAI, Nvidia, Microsoft, and Meta continue to push billions into AI, with the newly announced Stargate project earmarking $100 billion for Nvidia's role in the AI race.

āœØWhy this matters - DeepSeekā€™s low-cost, low-power AI models could change the game for the entire industry. If their claims hold up, it could mean less resource-intensive AI models might be the way of the future, and thatā€™s got the big players on edge. Such a shift could force big tech companies to reconsider their expensive AI strategies and the future of AI development.
