Anthropic researchers crack open the "black box" of AI models

📓Context of the news - One of the unsettling aspects of today's leading AI systems is that even their creators don't fully understand how they function. Unlike traditional computer programs, large language models like those powering ChatGPT are not manually programmed but instead learn autonomously by analyzing vast amounts of data and identifying language patterns. As a result, when these models malfunction, it's challenging to explain why. This lack of transparency and interpretability has led to these AI models being referred to as a "black box."

🚀News - On Tuesday, the AI lab Anthropic announced a breakthrough in addressing this "black box" problem of AI.

Researchers developed a technique to scan an AI model's "brain," enabling them to identify neuron collections, or "features," associated with different concepts. They successfully applied this technique to their second-most powerful model, Claude Sonnet.

🤖What did they find? The researchers found millions of features within Claude, such as those representing bias, fraud, toxic speech, and manipulative behavior. They learned that by suppressing these neuron collections, they could change the model's behavior.

For instance, they identified a feature representing "unsafe code." Stimulating these neurons caused Claude to produce code with a security vulnerability, while suppressing them led to the generation of safe, harmless code.

👨🏻‍🔬In conclusion - While the researchers acknowledged that the research is still in its early stages, they expressed optimism about its potential impact on AI safety. They suggested that the ability to manipulate features could offer a promising method for enhancing the safety of AI models. By suppressing specific features, they believe it might be possible to prevent potential vulnerabilities like jailbreaks.

China unveils chatbot trained on President Xi Jinping's thoughts

☕News - Beijing has launched a chatbot that has been trained on the thoughts of President Xi Jinping.

The development of this LLM is part of Chinese officials' extensive efforts to control the influence of artificial intelligence on Chinese internet users and to promote Xi's concepts on politics, economics, and culture through various mediums.

💁🏻‍♂️Key points -

  • The large language model was developed by the China Cyberspace Research Institute, operating under the Cyberspace Administration of China, the national regulator.

  • It has been trained on President Xi Jinping's political philosophy, known as "Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era," which includes his directives on political, social, and economic matters. It also incorporates official literature provided by the Cyberspace Administration of China.

  • The model is capable of answering queries, generating reports, summarizing data, and translating between Chinese and English. In the statement, the administration highlighted that the expertise and credibility of the corpus guarantee the professional standard of the generated content.

  • Currently, the model is being used within a research center supervised by the regulator. However, it may eventually be made available for broader use, according to an individual involved in the project.
