US Patent Office clarifies patent eligibility for AI-assisted inventions
👨🏻🔬News - On 12 February, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office provided clarification on the circumstances under which it will issue patents for inventions created with the aid of artificial intelligence, addressing a rising concern in intellectual property law.
The agency's new guidance states that patents can include inventions assisted by AI, but it emphasizes the importance of focusing on human contributions when determining patent eligibility. This approach aims to uphold patents as a means of encouraging and rewarding human creativity.
✨Key points from the guidance -
The guidance emphasized that although using AI doesn't automatically disqualify a human inventor from obtaining a patent, an individual who merely presents a problem to an AI system might not qualify for a patent for the output generated by the system.
The agency noted that an individual can obtain a patent for an AI-assisted invention only if they have made a significant contribution to it.
The guidance further highlighted that a significant contribution could be proved by how the person crafts the prompt to tackle a specific problem and get a certain answer from the AI system.
Additionally, it mentioned that an individual who contributes an "essential building block" for an AI-assisted invention may still be eligible for a patent, even if they were not involved in every step of its creation.
Lastly, it suggested that in certain cases, the individual(s) who design, construct, or train an AI system to address a specific problem and generate a particular solution may be considered as inventors.
Tech giants to gather in UK for first AI opportunity forum meet
☕News - Business and tech leaders from Google, Microsoft, Vodafone, and Barclays are set to meet in the UK today for the first “AI Opportunity Forum.”
The first session, hosted by Tech Secretary Michelle Donelan, will center on integrating AI solutions into businesses to stimulate economic growth. This session marks the beginning of a series of three planned for the AI Opportunity Forum, with subsequent meetings scheduled for April and June.
🤔What is the AI opportunity forum though? Announced by UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in December, the forum aims to promote the adoption of AI in the private sector. Its purpose is to showcase the significant opportunities AI offers, encourage businesses to adopt it more extensively to drive growth and explore new ways of operating alongside the technology.
According to Donelan, the forum will build on existing collaborative efforts involving multiple stakeholders to explore how AI can be developed to help people, communities, and society.
😀What's more? The meeting comes amid the release of the AI assurance introduction guide from the Responsible Technology Adoption Unit. The guide is a response to the principles laid out in the UK government's AI white paper from the previous year.
AI chatbots allowing users to talk with Hitler, Nazi figures spark concerns of extremism
😳News - AI experts are urging world leaders to regulate the rapid growth of artificial intelligence due to its concerning impact on society. Recent incidents involving AI chatbots allowing users to converse with historical figures such as Hitler and Nazis have intensified concerns about the potential for promoting extremist ideologies.
🤖For context - Gab, an American social networking platform, has reportedly created chatbots featuring characters such as Nazi leader Adolf Hitler and Osama bin Laden.
While the platform's tools are still in beta, a preview indicates that the company has introduced several AI chatbots, including one called "Uncle A," posing as Hitler, who denies the Holocaust and dismisses the genocide of six million Jews as "preposterous" and a lie made up by enemies.
😥The larger issue - Besides twisting well-documented historical facts, experts are concerned that these chatbots can be used as to spread false information, encourage extreme beliefs, promote hate and antisemitism.
In line with this, Tech against Terrorism, a United Nations-backed group combatting online extremism, recently warned that the "weaponization of chatbots" now poses a clear security threat.
