AI tools powered by OpenAI and Meta generate sexist content, says UNESCO

♀️News - According to a new study released by UNESCO, the AI tools developed by OpenAI and Meta, which are widely used globally, exhibit bias against women.

For context, major AI companies rely heavily on internet data to train their algorithms, enabling their tools to imitate the writing of Oscar Wilde or produce images resembling Salvador Dali's work. However, critics argue that these outputs often reflect racial and gender biases. 

So, UNESCO experts conducted tests on Meta's Llama 2 algorithm and OpenAI's GPT-2 and GPT-3.5, which powers the free version of the widely used chatbot ChatGPT, to check for biases.

👩🏻‍💻Key findings from the study include -

  • The study revealed that each algorithm, referred to in the industry as Large Language Models (LLMs), exhibited clear evidence of bias against women.

  • The tools generated texts where women's names were linked with words like "home," "family," or "children," while men's names were associated with "business," "salary," or "career."

  • While men were depicted in high-status roles such as teachers, lawyers, and doctors, women were often portrayed as prostitutes, cooks, or domestic servants.

🤷🏻‍♀️What's the solution? UNESCO, releasing the report to mark International Women's Day, recommended that AI companies should begin by hiring more women and minorities in their workforce. Additionally, the organization urged governments to regulate AI to ensure ethical practices.

India announces $1.25 billion budget for AI-related projects

🏦News - On Thursday, India approved a $1.25 billion investment in artificial intelligence projects, as part of its efforts to promote AI innovation in both public and private sectors within the country's ecosystem.

🧐What will the money be used for? The approved budget will be used to set up a large computing infrastructure in India. This computing system aims to support the increasing demands of India’s rapidly growing AI startups and research field. The infrastructure will include 10,000 or more Graphics Processing Units (GPUs), established through partnerships between the public and private sectors, according to the Indian government.

The AI supercomputing infrastructure established will be accessible to startups, academia, researchers, and industry stakeholders. Additionally, a National Data Management Officer will be appointed to coordinate data quality improvement efforts across departments and ministries to support AI development and deployment. 

Furthermore, under the India AI Mission, the Indian government will facilitate access to AI programs and enhance technology-related courses at undergraduate, master's, and PhD levels to lower entry barriers. The government also plans to develop and deploy homegrown Large Multimodal Models (LMMs) and domain-specific foundational models for crucial sectors, using AI for significant socio-economic advancement.

🤨What about regulation though?  According to a statement from the technology ministry, while the government aims to boost the adoption and advancement of AI in the nation, it acknowledges the necessity for appropriate safeguards and plans to implement measures for responsible AI project execution. This involves creating native tools and frameworks, self-assessment checklists for innovators, and additional guidelines.

Top scientist claims human-level Artificial General Intelligence could be achieved in 3-8 years

🤖News - Ben Goertzel, a computer scientist famous for developing the humanoid robot Sophia, has suggested that artificial general intelligence (AGI) may arrive sooner than previously anticipated.

Speaking at the Beneficial AGI Summit in Panama, Goertzel stated that although human-level or superhuman AI might not be achieved until 2029 or 2030, there's a chance it could happen as early as 2027.

🤔 A reasonable assumption? Speaking at the conference, Goertzel acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding AGI development, stating, no one has achieved human-level artificial general intelligence yet, and there's uncertainty about when we'll get there. However, he expressed his belief that reaching human-level AGI within the next three to eight years is plausible.

After achieving this milestone, he suggested that AGI could quickly progress to become artificial superintelligence (ASI), containing the combined knowledge of human civilization. How? Well, he believes that once AGI achieves human-level intelligence, it could rapidly enhance its own capabilities, leading to an "intelligence explosion."

Nevertheless, Goertzel's predictions come with a caveat. He admits that even if AI were to achieve superhuman capabilities, it would not possess a "mind" comparable to that of humans.
