OpenAI and Google DeepMind employees issue warning about AI industry risks in open letter

♨️News - A group of current and former employees from major artificial intelligence companies have penned an open letter expressing worry about the industry's lack of safety oversight and pushing for better protection for whistleblowers.

The letter has backing from eleven current and former OpenAI employees and two from Google DeepMind, one of whom used to work at Anthropic. They're advocating for what they call a "right to warn about artificial intelligence."

📬What did the letter say?

  • The letter states that AI companies hold valuable non-public data about their systems' abilities, limitations, and potential risks. It argues that as long as these companies are not obligated to share much of this information with governments or the public, they cannot be trusted to do so voluntarily.

  • The letter advocates for better protection of workers at leading AI companies who speak out about safety concerns. It urges adherence to four principles focusing on transparency and accountability. This includes a clause ensuring that employees aren't compelled to sign non-disparagement agreements that prevent discussion of AI-related risks, as well as establishing a mechanism for employees to anonymously share concerns with board members.

🧐What's the most important point? The letter highlights that without government oversight, current and former employees are among the few people who can hold AI corporations accountable to the public. However, it points out that broad confidentiality agreements hinder their ability to voice concerns openly, thus limiting their capacity to address potential issues within these companies.

This is consistent with a recent Vox report, which revealed that OpenAI requires departing employees to sign highly restrictive non-disparagement and non-disclosure agreements, or risk losing all vested equity. [Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, issued an apology in response to the report, stating his intention to revise the company's off-boarding procedures.]

MIT researchers develop chatbot that lets you talk to your future self

🤖News - Since time machines aren't around yet, MIT researchers have developed an interesting alternative: a chatbot that mirrors your future self. This AI tool is designed to provide guidance and insights, prompting individuals to reflect on their long-term goals and decisions more deeply.

According to Pat Pataranutaporn, a key contributor to the project, the aim is to prompt individuals to think about the future and make positive changes in their behaviour.

🕵🏻‍♂️How does it work? Users start by answering questions about themselves, family, past experiences, and future goals. They upload a photo, which the system digitally ages to depict them at 60 years old.

The program then creates synthetic memories based on the user's responses for the simulated older self. Subsequently, the chatbot, powered by OpenAI’s GPT3.5, presents itself as a hypothetical older version of the user, capable of discussing life experiences.

Based on a preprint scientific paper, trials involving 344 volunteers indicate that conversations with the chatbot reduced anxiety and fostered a stronger connection to their future selves. This in turn is expected to promote better decision-making, such as setting goals, exercising regularly, maintaining a healthy diet, and saving for the future.

🤔What does an insider think? Ivo Vlaev, a behavioral science professor at the University of Warwick, noted that people often struggle to envision their future selves, but doing so could lead to increased persistence in education, healthier lifestyles, and more prudent financial planning. He praised the MIT project as a compelling application of behavioral science principles, suggesting that by making the future self more prominent and relevant, it could effectively guide behavior toward beneficial outcomes.
