Vimeo's new AI features are a game-changer for video creators

🍵News - Vimeo, a video hosting and sharing platform, announced a suite of AI-powered tools to create professional-looking videos. These tools will be available starting July 17 as part of Vimeo's standard plan, which costs $20 per month.

🧰What are these AI-powered tools tough?

• Script generator - Vimeo's new script generator would use AI to create video scripts. You provide a short description, tone, length, font size, and pacing, and the generator will create a script based on your inputs.

• The teleprompter tool would display the script on a screen in front of the camera, so the user can read it as they record the video.

• Text-based video editor - A tool that can automatically identify and delete filler words and awkward pauses from a video.

Ashraf Alkarmi, Vimeo’s chief product officer expects AI to remain a core focus for Vimeo moving forward. He said, “We’re clearly only scratching the surface of what AI can accomplish for organizations and the people within them, and I envision a future in which AI knowledge is a prerequisite, not a luxury, to video production.”

AI opens door to a new understanding of animal behavior

📰News - Researchers at Tel Aviv University have developed a new way through AI to decode bat vocal communication. This could revolutionize the way we understand animal language, as it could help us to decode the complex and nuanced ways that animals communicate with each other.

🤯What was the process like? To understand the information conveyed by bat vocalizations, researchers at Tel Aviv University constructed a unique open-air colony of bats. This unique setup allowed researchers to examine bats from the day they were born. Their voice was recorded around the clock.

🧐What’s more? To create an AI that can communicate with bats, researchers created a large database of audio and video recordings of bat vocalizations. They spent hours labeling the data and training a voice recognition program to analyze the sounds. The algorithm was able to match the sounds with specific social interactions, revealing that bats use complex language to communicate with each other.

The research process is still ongoing and the team has been successful so far. The researchers are now discovering new ways to have long-term social interaction between bats in the lab.

EU consumer group calls for urgent investigation into generative AI

📻News - The EU's largest consumer group, the BEUC has has called on the European Union (EU) to urgently investigate the risks of generative AI. Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence (AI) that can create new content, such as text, images, and videos.

🤔What does BEUC want?

• The BEUC is concerned about the potential risks of generative AI, such as its ability to be used to create deepfakes.

• The consumer group believes that the EU should create a comprehensive framework for regulating generative AI, require companies that use generative AI to be transparent about how they are using it, and give consumers more control over how their data is used by generative AI systems.

While some technologists have expressed concerns that AI could lead to the extinction of humanity, the debate in Europe has focused on the more immediate impacts of AI, such as its potential to create inequities in access to services, spread disinformation, and stifle competition.
