Italy to prioritize Artificial Intelligence as a key agenda item in the G7 Summit

📻News - In her announcement on Thursday, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni highlighted that tackling the dangers posed by artificial intelligence will be one of the key themes for Italy's one-year presidency of G7.

The country will organize many important ministerial meetings this year, and in June, there will be a summit for leaders. However, Prime Minister Meloni mentioned that she wishes to have a special meeting about AI before June. "I am hugely concerned about the impact (of AI) on the labor market," she stated, emphasizing the current revolutionary changes that threaten human intellect.

🤔What has Italy done so far to address AI dangers?

  • The Italian government has been actively considering the impact of AI on employment for a while. In May 2023, Italy dedicated 30 million euros (equivalent to $33 million) to the Fondo per la Repubblica Digitale (FRD) to improve the skills of unemployed individuals and those facing the threat of automation and AI replacing their jobs.

  • In March 2023, the Italian Data Protection Authority (DPA) threw a red flag at OpenAI, specifically its ChatGPT service. They were concerned about how OpenAI was collecting and using Italian users' data. There was no clear legal reason for them to store all this personal information. However, in April 2023, OpenAI made changes to ChatGPT to address the concerns.

As Italy takes the helm of the G7, the spotlight on AI issues reflects a growing acknowledgment of the importance of international collaboration in navigating the ethical, social, and economic implications of AI.

Young individuals opt for AI therapist bots over human psychologists

📻News - Much to the surprise of many, sci-fi movies are becoming a reality to some extent. In a shocking revelation, it was found that young individuals between the age of 16-30 are heavily relying on AI-driven therapists instead of seeking counselling from certified professionals.

🤖A case in point - A total of 78 million messages, including 18 million since November, have been shared on Character.ai - a popular platform where anyone can create chatbots based on fictional or real people. Interestingly, 3.5 million people visit the overall site daily.

Described as a support system for life difficulties, the platform hosts 475 bots related to mental health, with "Psychologist" being the most favored character. Users on Reddit laud its positive impact, with one calling it a "lifesaver" and another highlighting its role in fostering emotional discussions. The text format has made the bot all the more interesting since many young people find comfort in texting. A few users admit to finding clarity in their thoughts, while some say the bot is their 3 a.m. friend.

👩‍⚕️What do the psychologists say? Well, professional psychotherapist Theresa Plewman has tested the Psychologist bot. She's not surprised that younger generations find this type of therapy popular but questions its effectiveness. According to her, the bot quickly makes assumptions and offers advice, unlike human responses.

AI to dominate world's biggest trade show of 2024 even with Altman’s absence

🧓News - While OpenAI's Sam Altman won't be present at the upcoming CES trade show (an annual trade show organized by the Consumer Technology Association) in Las Vegas, the ripple effect of the generative artificial intelligence frenzy sparked by his startup last year will still be evident.

From devices aiding the visually impaired and safety systems addressing concerns in schools to facial recognition software gauging vital signs and cabin-monitoring systems in autonomous cars, numerous companies are gearing up to make announcements at the event, highlighting their incorporation of AI into various gadgets.

🕵️‍♂️What about NVIDIA? Anticipated at the upcoming CES, NVIDIA is set to unveil significant updates regarding its AI endeavors. The spotlight is expected to shine on the much-anticipated GeForce RTX 40-series Super GPUs, creating a buzz in the gaming industry. Scheduled for January 8, 2024, reports indicate that the chipmaker will introduce its Super GPUs series during the event. However, it's worth noting that individual cards might be announced on separate dates, with each one receiving a concise review at a time.

NVIDIA partners are also likely to unveil products utilizing the GeForce RTX-40 Series. Bosch, a German company, is anticipated to present an innovative gun-detection system that integrates video and audio AI for proactive security measures, particularly addressing firearm-related concerns in schools.

  • Humane AI, a company revolutionizing digital wearables, has recently introduced a screenless AI-pin device that is equivalent to a mobile phone. Experts believe it could even replace iPhones.

  • AI perceives time in a very different way than humans do. The algorithms process a year's worth of data in a matter of seconds. This, usually, gives AI the impression that time is passing much more quickly than it is for humans.

  • AI is poor at taking accountability because it is not programmed to understand the concept of responsibility. AI can be programmed to follow rules and complete tasks, but it cannot understand why those rules are important.
