LinkedIn introduces new AI tools for learning, recruitment, marketing, and sales
👨💼News - LinkedIn, the professional social networking and recruitment platform, is introducing a range of new AI features across its job hunting, marketing, and sales products to keep its nearly 1 billion users engaged and aligned with current work-related trends.
These updates include a major overhaul of its Recruiter talent sourcing platform with integrated AI support, an AI-powered LinkedIn Learning coach, and a new AI-driven tool for enhancing marketing campaigns.
🧑💻Is this the company's first AI experiment? LinkedIn is not new to experimenting with AI. In fact, the platform has a history of using artificial intelligence extensively, although much of it has operated behind the scenes.
The platform has been using AI for various purposes, including suggesting connections and providing insights about user activity. Earlier this year, they introduced AI-powered writing suggestions for users composing messages and AI-generated job descriptions to aid recruiters. The new updates are a continuation and expansion of these AI initiatives.
🕵️♂️What's more? While LinkedIn previously developed its own AI tools for back-end operations, it is now outsourcing its AI capabilities. Having been acquired by Microsoft a few years back, the company will be utilizing technology from Microsoft and OpenAI for several of its new features.
MIT researchers develop an AI copilot that reduces flight risk levels
✈️News - Researchers at the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) have developed the Air-Guardian, a proactive copilot system designed to reduce the risk level of flights and increase the success rate of navigating to target points.
💺How does it function? The Air-Guardian uses a computer program equipped with eye-tracking technology to monitor the pilot's gaze, allowing it to gain insights into the pilot's focus. This information aids the computer in making more informed decisions aligned with the pilot's actions.
It can also identify potential risks early on by assessing the pilot's attention unlike conventional autopilot systems that only intervene when safety breaches occur. This is especially helpful as modern pilots deal with an overwhelming amount of information from numerous displays, particularly during critical moments. In such scenarios, it's easy to become distracted or overlook critical details, and that's where the AI can swiftly assume control.
🛩️What makes it unique? The Air-Guardian system is flexible and can adapt to the specific needs of each situation, ensuring a balanced partnership between human pilots and the machine.
Moreover, the broader significance of this system extends far beyond aviation as such collaborative control methods have the potential for future applications in vehicles, drones, and a wide range of robotics.
Women-led AI startups receive just 2% of funding, despite booming industry
♀️News - According to a report by the Alan Turing Institute, female-led startups in the field of artificial intelligence represented a mere 2% of all AI startup deals in the last ten years.
The report revealed that when these female-led companies did secure funding, they averaged £1.3 million per deal, a stark contrast to the £8.6 million raised by all-male founder teams, highlighting a significant gender disparity in AI investment.
🔢What do the numbers say? Over the past year, there has been significant growth in investments in AI software. According to a Goldman Sachs report, global AI investment is expected to reach nearly $200 billion (£166 billion) by 2025. Furthermore, a recent Bloomberg report suggests that generative AI could potentially become a market worth $1.3 trillion by 2032.
Despite this surge in interest and funding for AI, particularly generative AI, there remains a notable lack of equal access for women and minorities in the technology and venture capital sectors.
🤺How can this issue be tackled? Promoting inclusivity within the venture capital sector is crucial to address this issue. Diversifying the entire entrepreneurial ecosystem to create a more inclusive and equitable environment for underrepresented groups, could also play an important role.

1990: British artist and computer scientist Harold Cohen created an AI program called AARON that generated abstract and expressive artworks, challenging the idea that only humans can be creative.
2010: Scientist Feng Zhang designed the CRISPR-Cas9, a tool that helped scientists in gene editing DNA. It used AI to look at the DNA and predict what might happen if one gene were to be changed to another.
2012: Computer scientist Alex Krizhevsky built an AI program called AlexNet that could look at pictures and tell the operator what was in them. It was submitted to the ILSVRC challenge and won the competition by a significant margin. The victory marked a turning point in the field of deep learning and computer vision.
