👩‍🍳What’s cooking in the newsroom?

Artificial intelligence promises to change the diagnosis of heart diseases

🗞️News - In a groundbreaking initiative, London's Golborne Medical Centre welcomed an AI stethoscope in the UK’s first deployment of the technology in primary care. The tool has been licensed by medical regulators for use by general physicians. Interestingly, it will be the very first AI product that can be relied on to prescribe life-saving medication without the need for a specialist review first.

🧐What’s special about this stethoscope? This innovative stethoscope, developed by Mayo Clinic spin-off Eko, mirrors the familiar design of traditional ones but comes with a crucial twist – it utilizes artificial intelligence to instantly detect heart disease. The development is particularly significant for Golborne, where nearly half of the patients hail from non-white minority ethnic groups facing a higher risk of heart disease-related fatalities.

The primary goal of the AI stethoscope is to bridge existing healthcare gaps, ultimately saving lives by providing early treatment to heart patients while they await further care. Experts anticipate that the prevalence of heart disease in the UK may be double the reported figures, highlighting the urgency of such advanced diagnostic tools.

👩‍⚕️In conclusion - The introduction of this AI-driven diagnostic tool represents a significant stride toward proactive healthcare. Thus, promising not only improved outcomes for patients but also substantial cost savings for the National Health Service.

Meta's AI scientist asks who should be held accountable when AI copies art

👨‍⚖️News - In the wake of ongoing AI copyright lawsuits, Meta's Chief AI scientist, on 29 December, raised some fundamental questions regarding copyright issues in the realm of generative AI.

LeCun's questions revolved around scenarios where a generative AI tool produces an image strikingly similar to a copyrighted piece, such as a drawing, painting, or movie screenshot. He, primarily challenged existing norms of accountability asking ‘Who should be held liable for potential copyright infringement?’

💁But what’s the matter? There's an ongoing debate about who should be responsible for AI-generated art: the creators of the tool, the artists using it, or the people who share it online. LeCun argues that the people sharing it should be accountable. He explains that copyright protects art from being copied without permission. Even if AI is used to make something similar, sharing it without permission is still copyright infringement.

This comes after The New York Times, on Thursday, filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft for copyright infringement. The Times claims the tech giants illegally used millions of its articles to train AI tools like ChatGPT, which offer similar information retrieval services, potentially undermining the Times' revenue streams.

Top AI achievements during the year 2023 and what to expect in 2024

👩‍⚖️News - 2023 witnessed a remarkable acceleration in artificial intelligence, marking a turning point in the world’s technological journey. From mind-bending feats of creativity to breakthroughs in healthcare and beyond, AI's impact was undeniable.

👩‍🏫Top 3 2023's AI accolades include -

  • Generative AI explodes - One standout accomplishment in 2023 is the breakthroughs in natural language processing, evident in the refinement of language models. The year witnessed the development of more nuanced and context-aware models, improving AI's ability to understand and respond to human language intricacies. Tools like ChatGPT and Dall-E 2 mastered the art of creating stunningly realistic images, music, and even code, blurring the lines between human and machine.

  • Medical marvels - AI in healthcare reached new heights with the deployment of innovative diagnostic tools and personalized treatment plans. AI algorithms made significant strides in diagnosing diseases like cancer and heart conditions with impressive accuracy, paving the way for personalized medicine and early intervention.

  • Robot revolution - On the robotics front, collaborative and adaptable robots became a focal point, demonstrating increased efficiency in various industries. Automation reached new heights, with robots not just performing repetitive tasks but collaborating with humans in surgery, construction, and even agriculture.

👨‍💻Looking ahead to 2024 - Experts anticipate advancements in AI ethics and responsible AI practices. With growing concerns about bias and transparency, a lot of countries will bring in regulations to provide safeguards. Furthermore, breakthroughs in reinforcement learning can be expected to lead to more capable and autonomous AI systems. Unfortunately, more job cuts can be on the way.

🤖Prompt engineering tips

  • Encourage creativity - Being creative with your prompts can help you get more accurate results. For example, you can start your prompt with "Imagine a world where..." This can help the chatbot think outside the box and come up with more innovative ideas. This method can be particularly beneficial when you are looking for solutions to problems that have no easy answers, or when you are exploring futuristic concepts.

  • Choose words with care - Like any computer system, AI tools can be excruciatingly precise in their use of commands and language, including not knowing how to respond to unrecognized commands or language. The most effective prompts use clear and direct wording. Avoid ambiguity, colorful language, metaphors, and slang, all of which can produce unexpected and undesirable results.

  • Pose open-ended questions - Rather than constraining the AI with binary yes-or-no inquiries, it thrives when presented with open-ended questions. For example, a simple prompt such as "Was the American Civil War about states' rights?" will likely lead to a similarly simple answer. However, a more open-ended prompt, such as "Describe the social, economic, and political factors that resulted in the outbreak of the American Civil War," will generate a detailed answer.
