👩🍳What’s cooking in the newsroom?
UK unveils new AI principles to protect consumers and businesses from risks
📰Context of the news - The UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is concerned that generative AI models like ChatGPT could be dominated by a handful of major tech companies. This could have a number of negative impacts on consumers and businesses. For example, it could lead to higher prices, less innovation, and fewer choices for consumers. As a result, new businesses might find it difficult to enter the market and compete.
📻News - To prevent this from happening, the CMA has unveiled a set of principles, including accountability, access and transparency, designed to promote responsible AI development, and to ensure that AI is used in a way that benefits consumers and businesses. It has also started a project to deepen its scrutiny of AI foundation models.
🤔What’s more? Sarah Cardell, the head of the UK's Competition and Markets Authority, on Monday, said that AI has the potential to significantly boost productivity and make millions of everyday tasks easier. However, a positive future can’t be guaranteed.
It is expected that these principles might be discussed at a global AI safety summit that Britain will host in six weeks. The CMA is also seeking views from industry leaders such as Google, Meta, OpenAI, Microsoft, and NVIDIA.
The CMA's scrutiny of AI foundation models is part of a growing trend among regulators around the world. In the United States, for example, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is investigating the use of AI by big tech companies.
US Senator Bernie Sanders calls for shorter workweek to share benefits of AI
🤵News - In light of technological advancements in AI and robotics, US Senator Bernie Sanders has called for a serious discussion on reducing the workweek. He argues that if these technologies increase productivity, workers should benefit in the form of more paid time off.
Sanders explains that the benefits of new technologies, such as AI and robotics, should go to workers, rather than just the wealthy. As per him, the emerging technologies should be used to improve people's lives, not just to increase productivity. In presence of AI, he envisions a future where people have more time to spend with their families, participate in cultural activities, and get a better education.
💂♀️Do workers want the same? According to statistics published by WhatToBecome (E-learning provider) earlier this year, 83% of Americans opined a 4-day work week would improve their work-life balance. And 63% of Americans said they would choose better work-life flexibility over a raise.
Well, there are also some potential challenges to implementing a shorter workweek. For example, it could lead to higher wages and reduced output for businesses. It could also be difficult to coordinate with other businesses and organizations that operate on a traditional 40-hour workweek.
Despite the challenges, Sanders believes that a shorter workweek is a viable and desirable goal.
AI robots could carry out COVID-like attack on NHS, expert warns
🤶News - A cybersecurity expert on the UK's AI task force has warned that AI robots could potentially be used to carry out an attack on the National Health Service (NHS) that could cause a disruption just like the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ian Hogarth stated that AI technology is developing at a rapid pace, and that this could make it easier for malicious actors to carry out cyber attacks too.
🧙♂️But how is NHS mitigating the risks? The NHS is investing in cybersecurity and developing new ways to detect and prevent AI attacks. It is also working with the UK's AI task force.
On the other hand, Hogarth's AI task force has received £100 million in government funding to help develop tools to mitigate the risks of AI. He said that it is important for countries around the world to collaborate on mitigating the risks of AI, and that this includes countries like China.
According to Future Markets Insights (a research firm), cybersecurity in the robotics market is anticipated to grow at a consistent CAGR of 11.7% during the period of 2023-2033.
In 2023, the market is projected to generate US$3.8 billion in sales, and by 2033, it is predicted to reach US$11.6 billion in value.

👩🏫Interesting facts
In 2018, IBM researchers discovered a new breed of malware called DeepLocker that used artificial intelligence to target specific victims. DeepLocker was highly evasive and could evade detection by traditional security solutions.
The media landscape is evolving as robots are now helping journalists to compose news pieces, even for major outlets like The Washington Post and BBC. Narrative Science's Quill, an AI platform, predicts that bots might craft 90% of news by 2025.
AI was used to analyze the data captured from Osama bin Laden's compound, revealing future al-Qaida plots. This was made possible by the National Media Exploitation Center's early investment in AI capabilities, such as text recognition, object detection, machine translation, and audio and image categorization.
