👩‍🍳What’s cooking in the newsroom?

Google requires election advertisers to disclose AI-generated content

🤶News - Google announced, on Wednesday, that it will require election advertisers to disclose AI-generated content in their ads starting in mid-November, a year ahead of the US presidential election.

In its blog, Google provided examples of ads that would require disclosure, such as those that make it seem like someone said or did something they did not actually say or do, and those that alter footage to make it appear as if events occurred that did not actually happen.

👩‍💻Why was this disclosure needed though? AI-generated content can be used to create fake news, propaganda, and other forms of misinformation that can mislead voters. By requiring advertisers to disclose when their ads contain AI-generated content, Google is helping protect democratic processes.

In fact, Mandiant, a Google-owned cybersecurity firm, recently released a report that observed an increase in the use of AI to conduct manipulative information campaigns online.

Google’s announcement comes just a week before top tech executives would attend an AI forum hosted by Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer in Washington.

OpenAI invites developers to its first developer conference on November 6

👩‍🎨News - OpenAI will host its first developer conference on November 6. The event will be held in San Francisco and will feature keynote addresses and breakout sessions.

It will provide an overview of OpenAI's work and its plans for the future. The breakout sessions will focus on specific topics, such as natural language processing, machine learning, and computer vision.

🦹What’s interesting about the conference? It is expected to attract hundreds of developers who are interested in learning more about the company's latest research and tools. OpenAI is likely to showcase new techniques for watermarking AI-generated content. We can also expect updates on its plans for Global Illumination, the AI design studio that it acquired in August.

The company recently pulled down its in-house tool for detecting AI-generated text due to its low accuracy. It is possible that the company will unveil a successor to this tool at the DevDay. Besides this, an update on GPT-5 can also be anticipated.

Furthermore, the conference is also an opportunity for the company to promote its generative AI tools to a broader audience.

AI proves to be a powerful tool in treating male infertility

🧑‍🍼News - A new AI software developed by researchers at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) can identify sperm in samples taken from severely infertile men at a speed that is 1,000 times faster than a human expert.

The software, called SpermSearch, has been designed to help men who have no sperm in their ejaculate at all, a condition called non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA).

💁‍♀️What’s unique about the AI software? In cases of NOA, a small portion of the testes is removed and examined under a microscope to find healthy sperm. This process can be long, tedious and inaccurate at times. In contrast, SpermSearch can identify healthy sperm in seconds by analyzing photographs of the samples that are uploaded to the computer. It could also be used to improve the success rates of in vitro fertilization (IVF)

🧝‍♀️Why does it matter? Sperm counts have been declining by half over the past four decades, and infertility is becoming a more common problem in men, across the world. Also, not a lot of attention has been paid to this issue in the recent past.

Hence, the discovery of SpermSearch is a major breakthrough in the field of male infertility. It has the potential to help millions of men who are unable to conceive naturally.

👩🏼‍💻What else is happening?

🤹🏻‍♀️Technical jargon simplified

  • Diffusion is a technique that uses a computer program to create images, text, or other creative content. It works by starting with a random image or text and then gradually adding more detail to it.

  • Algorithm is a set of instructions that tells a computer how to solve a problem. Algorithms can be used to perform a wide variety of tasks, such as sorting data, searching for information, and playing games.

  • Reinforcement learning is a type of machine learning where a system learns to behave in an environment by trial and error. The algorithm is rewarded for taking actions that lead to desirable outcomes and penalized for taking actions that lead to undesirable results.
