UK's cyber security agency raises alarm about AI's impact on upcoming elections

👨‍💻News - The UK's cyber security agency, stated in its annual review that the growing impact of AI poses a significant threat to the country's next national election.

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), highlighted that the UK general election, set for next year, will be the first to happen amidst major progress in the field of AI. This, according to the agency, could make existing challenges more significant.

😳What's more? The center warned that while Britain's old-fashioned paper-and-pencil voting system is nearly impossible to hack, the use of deepfake videos and "hyper-realistic bots'' could make spreading fake information during a campaign easier.

Furthermore, the agency noted that large language models (LLMs), like ChatGPT are highly likely to be used to generate fake content for disinformation campaigns aimed at disrupting the democratic process.

However, the UK may still get ahead of this situation. It recently became the first government globally to officially outline the risks associated with AI, including potential misuse by bad actors, and risks posed to society. The country's Frontier AI taskforce has also engaged top global experts to address the risks posed by advanced AI systems, giving them a fighting chance.

Spain launches first-ever AI regulatory sandbox for businesses to test their products

👨‍💼News - Spanish businesses now have the opportunity to test AI products and services in a regulatory sandbox established by Spanish law. A regulatory sandbox is similar to a controlled playground for businesses to test their products and services under a regulator's supervision, to ensure they meet legal requirements.

This comes after the EU encouraged member states to establish AI regulatory sandboxes aligned with the EU AI Act, a legal framework overseeing AI development and use in the European Union. Notably, Spain's AI regulatory sandbox is also the first of its kind.

🧐How will this help though?

  • The sandbox will help both private and public organizations test their AI systems to ensure they comply with the EU's AI Act requirements before the Act becomes fully effective.

  • Backed by the European Commission, the sandbox is expected to provide insights for the creation of new technical standards.

  • The initiative also aims to create a report with best practices and guidelines derived from testing. This report will assist the European Commission in developing EU guidelines, making it easier for companies to comply with future AI regulations.

Researchers develop an AI robot that could make oxygen from water on Mars

👨‍🔬News - A team of Chinese researchers have created an AI-powered robotic chemist that could extract oxygen from water on Mars.

This discovery is significant for future Mars missions, as it can optimize resources and reduce the need to transport oxygen from Earth.

🤔But how exactly will the AI extract oxygen? The AI would extract oxygen by using the frozen water ice on Mars. Basically, researchers used the AI to investigate water-splitting catalysts, which are substances that help break water into oxygen and hydrogen. The AI studied samples from different rocks found on Mars to find the catalyst that can be used to extract oxygen from the frozen water ice.

🤔What’s the conclusion? Equipped with a laser-scanning mechanism, the AI identified millions of molecules from six metallic elements in Mars rocks—iron, nickel, manganese, magnesium, aluminum, and calcium. The AI then tested 243 molecules in six weeks and found a top-performing catalyst capable of splitting water in Mars-like temperatures (34.6 degrees F/ minus 37 degrees C).

Interestingly, researchers estimated that traditional trial-and-error methods would take a human scientist around 2,000 years to achieve similar results. This highlights the transformative impact of AI in scientific discovery, showcasing its efficiency.

👩🏼‍💻What else is happening?

😸Casual AI banter

  • Humane AI, a company revolutionizing digital wearables, has recently introduced a screenless AI-pin device that is equivalent to a mobile phone. Experts believe it could even replace iPhones.

  • AI perceives time in a very different way than humans do. The algorithms process a year's worth of data in a matter of seconds. This, usually, gives AI the impression that time is passing much more quickly than it is for humans.

  •  AI is poor at taking accountability because it is not programmed to understand the concept of responsibility. AI can be programmed to follow rules and complete tasks, but it cannot understand why those rules are important.
