👩🍳What’s cooking in the newsroom?
U.S. House leaders from new bipartisan task force to tackle AI
🏛️News - On 20 February, leaders from the U.S. House of Representatives announced the creation of a bipartisan task force to study the benefits and risks of AI and potentially draft new laws to address concerns about the rapidly advancing technology.
This comes after multiple attempts in Congress to pass AI legislation have failed, despite multiple high-level discussions and proposals over the past year.
🧐What's their first order of business? The task force, led by House Speaker Mike Johnson and Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, will create a detailed report focusing on developing safeguards against present and future threats posed by AI. This report will encompass guiding principles, forward-looking recommendations, and bipartisan policy proposals, which will be formulated in collaboration with various congressional committees.
According to Representative Jay Obernolte, the Republican chair of the 24-member task force, the report will detail “the regulatory standards and Congressional actions needed to both protect consumers and foster continued investment and innovation in AI.”
While all this seems promising, it's important to note that the task force announcement didn't provide specific timelines or commitments that voters or watchdogs can hold them accountable for. Even the report is something they only “seek” to produce.
India's AI market to reach $17 billion by 2027, report finds
🤑News - A new report, co-published by Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and the IT industry body NASSCOM, predicts that India's AI market is set to reach an estimated $17 billion by 2027.
The growth is attributed to a rise in corporate technology expenditures, India's growing pool of AI talent, and an increase in investments in AI, according to a statement made by the two organizations before the report's release on Wednesday.
👩🏻💻Key points to note -
The report predicts that from 2024 to 2027, the AI industry in India will grow steadily at a rate of 25-35% per year.
The report also highlights that India has seen a 14x increase in people skilled in AI in the last seven years, placing it within the top five countries in this regard.
The report also noted that India has more than 420,000 employees currently working in AI-related roles and boasts the highest level of skill penetration in the field of AI.
The report indicated that as investment in AI continues to increase, the demand for AI talent in India is projected to grow at an annualized rate of 15% until 2027.
To this end, it added that 90% of the top 25 technology service providers have made significant commitments to Gen AI skilling.
Scientists suggest AI kill switches to prevent skynet-like scenarios
🤖Context of the news - As AI continues to advance rapidly, fears and concerns about the technology have grown too, prompting the question of how we can control it effectively.
🦸🏻♀️News - A recent paper from the University of Cambridge has suggested various methods for controlling AI, including incorporating built-in kill switches and remote lockouts into the technology's hardware.
🤔How will this be achieved? The paper proposes making changes to AI chips by adding extra components called co-processors. These co-processors would act like security guards for the AI, regularly checking a digital certificate to make sure it's allowed to operate. If the certificate is fake or outdated, the co-processors would slow down or stop the AI from working entirely. This would help ensure that the AI hardware is being used correctly and give a way to stop it if necessary.
🧌In conclusion - Although fictional portrayals of rogue AI are captivating, it's best if they remain just that—fictional. In reality, prioritizing precautionary measures is crucial. Thus, having a kill switch or remote lock regulated by various groups could ease worries and boost confidence in AI safety.

🕰️ Historic moments
1921 - Karel Čapek, a Czech playwright, published his science fiction play "Rossum's Universal Robots" (R.U.R.). The play introduced the word "robot" to the English language and explored the concept of factory-made artificial people.
1927 - The German science fiction film Metropolis, directed by Fritz Lang, featured one of the first on-screen depictions of a robot. The robot, named Maria, was physically indistinguishable from a human and was capable of independent thought and action. This film holds significance because it lent inspiration to other famous non-human characters such as C-P30 in Star Wars.
1929 - Japanese biologist and professor Makoto Nishimura created Gakutensoku, the first robot to be built in Japan. The name Gakutensoku means "learning from the laws of nature," and the robot was designed to be able to learn from people and nature.
