Florida Bar sets precedent with clear guidelines on ethical AI use for lawyers

🤖News - In a significant move, The Florida Bar has provided lawyers with clarity on the ethical use of artificial intelligence, following the California Bar's similar initiative in November. This guidance addresses concerns about potential violations of ethics rules when utilizing AI in legal practice.

Notably, this development may herald a broader trend, as bar associations in six other states, including New York, Texas, Illinois, New Jersey, Minnesota, and Kentucky, are actively examining responsible AI use among lawyers.

👨‍⚖️Details about the guidelines - Both Florida and California emphasize informed consent. Lawyers in Florida must obtain client permission before sharing confidential information with third-party AI programs like GPT-4 for tasks like drafting briefs. California lawyers are encouraged to "consider disclosure" and explain the benefits and risks of using AI on client matters.

One key point: lawyers cannot simply pass the buck to AI. Both states require attorneys to review AI-generated work products as thoroughly as they would that of paralegals or other non-lawyer assistants, ensuring accuracy and mitigating potential bias inherent in some AI programs.

Florida goes further, prohibiting lawyers from using AI for tasks requiring "a lawyer's personal judgment and participation," such as claim negotiations. While neither state allows charging hourly rates for time saved by AI, Florida suggests exploring alternative fee structures like flat-billing or contingent fees when efficiency gains are significant.

📻News - A new study from MIT researchers throws cold water on the fire of AI fear, suggesting that widespread job automation by intelligent machines may not be as imminent as previously predicted. While headlines often scream of robots stealing our jobs, a closer look reveals that most tasks deemed ripe for automation simply aren't economically viable for companies to replace with AI just yet.

Previous studies from Goldman Sachs, McKinsey, and even ChatGPT creators themselves have painted a bleak picture, with automation estimates reaching up to 80% of jobs. However, the MIT research team took a different approach, focusing on the feasibility and business rationale behind AI replacing human workers, specifically in jobs requiring visual analysis like quality control on factory lines.

👩‍🏫What was the exact finding? Contrary to popular belief, automating most of these tasks isn't currently attractive for businesses. Neil Thompson, co-author of the study, explains that while AI has significant potential to automate tasks, the cost of building and maintaining the necessary technology often outweighs the benefits. In other words, it's simply not worth it for many companies to replace a human inspector with a complex AI system at this point.

This doesn't mean AI won't eventually disrupt the job market, but the researchers believe the pace will be slower and less dramatic than some alarmist predictions suggest. However, the study has its limitations. Focusing solely on visual analysis tasks leaves out the looming impact of text- and image-generating models like ChatGPT.

Gmail tests a new AI feature that would let users write emails using voice

📰News - Gmail, the widely used email service, is reportedly testing a new feature that allows users to compose emails using their voice.

The release of this feature hasn’t been officially announced by the company yet. However, this upcoming function would be discoverable by activating a flag within Gmail settings. Once enabled, users can initiate voice drafting by selecting the 'Draft email with voice' button that appears while composing or replying to an email. This button would trigger a recording with a prominent microphone icon, allowing users to articulate their message. To conclude the voice recording, users can simply press the same button, and Gmail will then utilize generative AI to create a draft of the spoken message.

🧐What’s more? Upon completion, users will have the option to edit the AI-generated draft before finalizing and sending the email. While resembling Google Keyboard's existing speak-to-type feature, this innovation leverages generative AI and is seamlessly integrated into Gmail, expanding its accessibility to a broader user base.

Strings related to this feature were reportedly added in October of the previous year, though the exact release date for all users remains uncertain. This potential addition offers a convenient alternative for users who prefer voice input, especially in situations where typing may be inconvenient.
