👩🍳What’s cooking in the newsroom?
Japan aims for Generative AI breakthrough with massive computing power increase
🏣News - Japan's government has embarked on a mission to significantly enhance the country's computational capabilities for the advancement of generative artificial intelligence technology, targeting a 20 to 30-fold increase in computing power by the end of March 2028.
Japan's current computing capacity for generative AI development stands at 2–3 exaflops, capable of performing around 2–3 quintillion floating-point operations per second (FLOPS). To meet the anticipated surge in AI demand, the ministry aims to elevate this capacity to 60 exaflops by the end of fiscal 2027.
🤔Is this target too ambitious? Some critics have opined that the target is ambitious in the sense that it would represent a significant increase over Japan's current capacity of 2-3 exaflops. This would require a major investment in hardware and infrastructure, and it would be a challenge to staff and maintain such a large system.
Well, the ministry has set such a target for the first time as the global race heats up for generative AI development.
🤖What’s more? To protect its semiconductor industry, the ministry is considering making companies that make important things, like semiconductors, promise not to share their trade secrets with other countries if they want government aid.
AI offers hope for early lung cancer detection in non-smokers
🗞️News - In a groundbreaking study, researchers have developed an artificial intelligence model that can identify non-smokers at high risk for lung cancer using routine chest X-rays.
The findings, which will be presented at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), could revolutionize lung cancer screening for non-smokers.
👨⚕️What’s special about the study?
The study, led by researchers from the Cardiovascular Imaging Research Center (CIRC) at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Harvard Medical School, utilized deep learning technology to analyze 147,497 chest X-rays of asymptomatic smokers and never-smokers. The AI model was trained to recognize subtle patterns in the X-ray images that are associated with lung disease.
When applied to a separate cohort of 17,407 patients, the AI model accurately identified 28% of patients as high risk for lung cancer. Among these high-risk individuals, 2.9% were diagnosed with lung cancer within the next six years, a rate more than twice that of patients in the low-risk group.
The findings have significant implications for lung cancer screening, as non-smokers account for approximately 15% of all lung cancer cases. Current screening guidelines recommend low-dose CT scans for adults aged 50-80 years with a history of smoking, but not for non-smokers.
Nvidia CEO predicts AI to rival human capabilities in just five years
👨💼News - Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, on Wednesday, expressed his belief that artificial intelligence is rapidly closing the gap with human intelligence. During the New York Times' annual DealBook Summit, Huang asserted that within the next five years, we will witness AI systems capable of performing at a "fairly competitive" level compared to human intelligence.
This optimistic forecast aligns with Nvidia's thriving business, fueled by the escalating demand for high-performance graphics processing units (GPUs). Nvidia's financial performance reflects the surging demand for AI technology. The company's revenue during its fiscal third quarter experienced a threefold increase, while net income skyrocketed to $9.24 billion, a remarkable leap from $680 million recorded a year earlier.
😎Is this forecast true though? Well, some skeptics say that AI is far from being perfect and taking over humans. However, recently, the Nvidia CEO’s voice was also shared by Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt. As per him, AI capabilities could pose a threat to humanity within the next decade. He also expressed dismay over the perceived lack of efforts by tech companies to mitigate these risks.
