👩🍳What’s cooking in the newsroom?
Canadian Chamber of Commerce forms AI council to shape public policy
♨️News - The Canadian Chamber of Commerce has established a council with the purpose of shaping public policy on AI.
Named the Future of AI Council, the 30-member group will be co-chaired by e-commerce giant Amazon and software business SAP Canada. Its members will include Meta Platforms Inc., Google, BlackBerry Ltd., Cohere, Scotiabank, and Microsoft.
🧐What is the council's key objective? The chamber announced that the council will primarily focus on advocating for government policies centered on the responsible development and ethical use of AI in business. It will also promote government policies that position AI as a positive economic force.
The council's first order of business involves examining Bill C-27, a federal initiative aimed at addressing AI-related dangers.
🤔What prompted this move though? According to a statement by the chamber, this move is a response to economic changes triggered by the sudden AI boom, which was brought about by the launch of ChatGPT last year. Recognizing the transformative impact of AI, the chamber aims to position Canada favorably by fostering a pro-business environment.
To achieve this, it highlights that simplifying rules and removing obstacles are essential steps in fostering innovation. Moreover, the chamber believes these steps will help the country attract crucial investment, drive sustainable economic growth, and establish global leadership in the field of AI.
OpenAI staff issue ultimatum, threaten mass exit unless board steps down
☕News - OpenAI's employees have issued an ultimatum, declaring that they will leave the AI startup to join their former boss—Sam Altman at Microsoft's new division unless the current board promptly resigns.
🤓What's more? The letter, signed by 743 out of the company's 770 employees, questions the board's competence, accusing it of undermining the company's efforts.
Interestingly, among the signatories of the letter is Ilya Sutskever, OpenAI's chief scientist and a member of the board that fired Altman in the first place. In a statement on X, Ilya admitted his mistake, expressing deep regret for his involvement in the board's actions. He emphasized his love for what the company has achieved and pledged to work towards reuniting the company.
With only two of the three remaining board members required to change their stance, Altman's statement on X, "we are all going to work together some way or other," suggests that the fight continues.
👀How has the industry reacted to all this? Dan Ives of investment firm Wedbush Securities noted that Microsoft emerged stronger from the situation, but it cast a negative light on OpenAI. Interim CEO Emmett Shear acknowledged the poorly executed removal of Altman, stating it severely undermined trust in the company. Meanwhile, various tech experts applauded Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella's decision to bring Altman on board.
On a side note, Microsoft is considering joining OpenAI's board if Altman returns to the company.
British PM urges global leaders to use AI in fight against malnutrition
🗣️ News - Speaking at the Global Food Security Summit in London on 20 November, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called on global leaders to leverage AI technology to fight global malnutrition.
He emphasized the need for a new approach due to the worsening food crisis driven by climate change. To this end, he announced a new UK science initiative aimed at developing crops that can withstand climate challenges, such as flood-tolerant rice and disease-resistant wheat.
🍚Why is this an important cause? This cause holds immense importance as;
821 million people globally are starving, according to the UN's findings.
15,000 children die every day because of malnutrition.
Additionally, 22% of children under five (151 million in total) face growth delays linked to dietary issues.
🕵️♂️Has AI shown promise in this area? Yes. Germany's largest private aid organization partnered with Action Against Hunger, launching the Child Growth Monitor app in 2018 in India. This app, powered by Microsoft Azure and AI services, aided health workers in identifying and caring for children facing chronic malnutrition. AI proved beneficial here in overcoming the difficulty of determining, through traditional methods or just by looking, whether a child is affected by malnutrition.
This goes to show that, while billions of dollars are already spent globally to fight malnutrition, AI technology has the potential to make these expenditures more efficient and targeted.
