UK, US join forces to combat rise in AI-generated child sexual abuse images

👮‍♂️News - The UK and US have joined forces to tackle the growing issue of AI-generated child sexual abuse images. The two nations have released a shared statement promising to collaborate on finding new solutions to stop the spread of these harmful images created by dangerous predators, and have invited other countries to join their efforts.

The partnership closely follows the recent approval of the Online Safety Bill by the UK Parliament. This bill establishes that AI-generated child sexual exploitation and abuse content is unlawful, regardless of whether it depicts a real child or not.

🥷Why was this needed? Investigations by the Internet Watch Foundation revealed a troubling increase in AI-created child abuse images, even involving infants and young children. The organization also discovered an online guide aimed at assisting wrongdoers in improving their instructions to AI systems, making the results appear more realistic.

The UK's Home Secretary, Suella Braverman emphasized the urgency of addressing child sexual abuse, describing it as a terrible crime that transcends borders and requires global action. She highlighted that the disturbing increase in AI-generated child abuse images, not only encourages offenders but also hinders law enforcement efforts to find real victims online.

Mark Zuckerberg to open Connect developer conference with Meta's AI developments

☕News - Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg will open the Connect developer conference today, with a focus on artificial intelligence in addition to virtual reality and augmented reality. The company is expected to reveal the next version of its VR headset, the Quest 3, as well as new AI chatbots and other AI tools and features designed to keep users engaged.

😅Meta's biggest challenge? Meta's biggest challenge is to find ways to keep people engaged on their platforms, particularly in the face of competition from companies such as TikTok.

When Meta launched its advanced AI large language model called Llama 2, it allowed people to use it for free both for research and business purposes. However, it was quickly overshadowed by OpenAI's ChatGPT, which led to a rush of interest in generative AI tools.

Moreover, much like its tech peers Google and Microsoft, Meta has long had a big research team of computer scientists dedicated to working towards its AI goals. Despite this, the uncertainty around the global economy has forced the company to cut jobs and focus on hiring select AI experts to work on their long-term goals.

Amazon could use your conversations with Alexa to train its AI model

🍵News - Last week, Amazon unveiled enhanced AI features for its Alexa devices, powered by a model known as AlexaLLM. In a recent update, Amazon's senior vice president of devices and services, Dave Limp, mentioned that some user interactions with Alexa would be used to further train the AI model.

Limp explained that only those users who opt for a "customized" Alexa experience, would be willingly contributing their voice data and conversations to support Amazon's LLM training efforts.

However, the exact volume of voice data required for Amazon's model training and the extent to which it might be utilized for other purposes remain uncertain.

😳Are there any concerns ? Amazon assured customers that they can still maintain control over their Alexa experience through a range of privacy tools and controls. For instance, users will always be aware when Alexa is actively listening, indicated by the glowing blue light and an optional audible tone.

Traditionally, Echo devices respond to specific keywords like "Alexa," "Echo," or "Computer." However, with AlexaLLM, the new "Alexa, let's chat" function can be activated using Visual ID, allowing users to engage Alexa without cue words, simply by facing their smart display devices.
