OpenAI outlines a safety plan for dealing with the dangers of AI
🗞️News - In a crucial step towards responsible AI development, OpenAI has unveiled its "Preparedness Framework," a comprehensive plan to track, evaluate, and minimize the risks associated with its groundbreaking technologies. This "living document" marks a significant evolution in OpenAI's safety approach, outlining concrete measures to ensure its powerful models benefit, not harm, humanity.
🤔How will it be handled though? Central to the framework is the newly established Preparedness Team, tasked with rigorously testing and scrutinizing OpenAI's cutting-edge models. This proactive monitoring by the Preparedness Team, even during training phases, would aim to detect and address potential dangers before they materialize. The team's findings will be distilled into dynamic scorecards, offering a real-time assessment of each model's risk level.
These technical evaluations will be then fed into a robust governance process, where a cross-functional Safety Advisory Group would weigh risks and make crucial safety decisions. OpenAI will implement clear baselines: their powerful AI models will only be released if they're "medium" safe or less, after fixing any problems. The team will keep working on models rated "high" safe.
🤖What’s the take of Sam Altman? OpenAI's CEO acknowledges the long-term dangers of their AI tech, but he also wants to fix immediate problems like bias. He worries overly strict regulations could hurt smaller companies, but he's also eager to commercialize OpenAI's work and grow the company quickly.
Washington lawmakers propose legislation for AI task force
🤓News - Lawmakers in Washington state have joined forces to study the potential impacts, both good and bad, of artificial intelligence. This proactive move comes amid growing concerns about the ethical implications of this rapidly developing technology.
Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson is at the forefront of this initiative, introducing Senate Bill 5838 and House Bill 1934. If approved, these bills would establish the first-ever artificial intelligence task force. The primary objective of this task force would be to thoroughly study the benefits and risks associated with AI, addressing critical questions about issues such as racial profiling and decision-making in areas like college admissions.
👾What’s more? The proposed task force, comprising of experts, would compile recommendations and present them to the Attorney General’s office, the state legislature, and the governor by 2025. Any potential regulations or new laws resulting from these recommendations would then undergo the legislative process, requiring approval from lawmakers.
The bipartisan support for this legislative initiative highlights the shared recognition of the need to navigate the challenges posed by AI.
Life predictions made possible by Artificial Intelligence, researchers show
📰News - Researchers from DTU, University of Copenhagen, ITU, and Northeastern University in the U.S. have developed artificial intelligence capable of predicting events in people's lives.
By utilizing large amounts of data about individuals and training transformer models, similar to those used in language processing, the AI system called life2vec can systematically organize data to forecast life events, including estimating the time of death.
😸What are the key findings of the report?
The findings of this research project, detailed in the article "Using Sequences of Life-events to Predict Human Lives" published in Nature Computational Science, demonstrate the model's effectiveness in analyzing health data and employment history as well.
Once trained, the life2vec model outperforms other advanced neural networks, exhibiting high accuracy in predicting outcomes such as personality traits and the timing of death.
Sune Lehmann, a professor at DTU and the first author of the article, highlights the significance of the study, stating, "Scientifically, what is exciting for us is not so much the prediction itself, but the aspects of data that enable the model to provide such precise answers."
When researchers scrutinized the model's responses, they found alignment with existing social science findings. For instance, individuals in leadership positions or with higher incomes were more likely to survive, while factors such as being male, having specific skills, or having a mental diagnosis were associated with a higher risk of mortality.
