US' Department of Homeland Security introduces new AI rules to protect privacy

🫣News - The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is planning to announce new limits on its use of artificial intelligence. The agency has also revealed its success using the technology to aid in drug busts and catch criminals.

This simply means that the DHS will be more cautious about how it uses AI, while still recognizing the benefits that the technology can offer.

👮‍♂️Any interesting opinion? DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, on Thursday, stated DHS must ensure that its use of AI is responsible, trustworthy, and effective, and that it safeguards privacy, civil rights, and civil liberties while avoiding bias. It must also be transparent and explainable to the public.

👷‍♂️What is DHS using AI for? The Homeland Security Department is quickly adopting artificial intelligence technologies for a variety of important tasks, such as border control and tracking fentanyl trafficking. In the near future, the DHS also plans to use AI to improve supply chain security and digital forensics capabilities, even though there are some unique challenges associated with using this technology.

Well, the decision to implement new AI rules to protect privacy is a positive step. It shows that the agency is working earnestly towards mitigating the risks associated with AI.

Google's Gemini AI software to launch soon, challenging OpenAI's GPT-4

🕵️‍♂️News - Google is set to release its new AI software, Gemini, to the businesses very soon. However, the company is currently giving developers early access to a large version of Gemini, but not the largest version, which is still under development. The largest version is expected to be comparable to GPT-4.

Google plans to make Gemini available to businesses through its Google Cloud Vertex AI service. Google Brain and DeepMind, two leading AI research labs have been working together on this project.

🤷‍♀️But what will Gemini offer? It is a collection of large language models that can be used to power a variety of applications, including chatbots, text summarization, and text generation.

The software is expected to improve Google's business products like Google Docs and Slides. It would also make Google Bard better and more efficient.

💁What’s special about it? It is currently five times more powerful than the most advanced GPT-4 models, and is expected to be 20 times more powerful than ChatGPT by the end of 2024, according to SemiAnalysis (a research firm).

In fact, Gemini can even automate tasks that people would otherwise have to do. This could make businesses in many industries, like customer service, healthcare, finance, and education, much more efficient.

AI predicts patients' risk of death within 5-90 days of hospitalization

📻News - A team of researchers at OSF HealthCare in Illinois has developed an artificial intelligence model that can predict a patient's risk of death within five to 90 days after admission to the hospital. The goal of the model is to help clinicians have important end-of-life discussions with these patients.

The AI model was tested on many patients from different backgrounds, and it was found that patients who the model said were more likely to die in the hospital, were actually nearing death.

🤖What’s more? To be precise, the AI model was trained on 13 different types of patient information, including clinical trends, how often patients have visited the health care system, and their age.

The researchers believe that the AI model could help doctors save lives by preventing patients from dying without getting the hospice care they might have wanted if they had made their wishes known sooner.

Dr. Jonathan Handler, the lead author of the study and a senior fellow of innovation at OSF HealthCare confessed that the AI model is not perfect, but it can help doctors start conversations with patients about their end-of-life wishes.
