👩‍🍳What’s cooking in the newsroom?

Intel  to launch China-specific AI chips with reduced capabilities to comply with U.S. regulations

🖥️News - Intel plans to introduce two AI chips with reduced capabilities for the Chinese market, to comply with U.S. export regulations and sanctions. This move mirrors Nvidia's announcement of  China-specific chips earlier this year.

According to a white paper published on the company's website on April 12th, the two chips, dubbed HL-328 and HL-388, are set to be launched in June and September, respectively.

😺What's more? The company's AI chips tailored for the Chinese market are based on its latest Gaudi 3 product line, unveiled on 9 April, and share similar hardware features such as on-chip memory, high-bandwidth memory, and interface standards.

However, to comply with export control regulations, the chips' performance will be significantly reduced. Despite this, the chips are expected to perform on par with Nvidia's H20, which currently stands as the fastest GPU approved for sale in China.

Although this decision will enable Intel to sustain its foothold in the Chinese market while complying with U.S. regulations, the diminished capabilities of the chips may restrict their potential applications within China when compared to their global counterparts.

World's first "Miss AI" beauty pageant to award winner with $13K prize

👯‍♀️News - For the very first time, an upcoming pageant will showcase AI-generated female contestants competing in a beauty pageant. These models and influencers, created through artificial intelligence, will contend for a $13,000 prize and the title of "Miss AI."

This innovative event marks the beginning of such contests, with plans to expand the concept to include themes like fashion, diversity, and computer-generated male participants.

💁🏻‍♀️Key details - Well, the rules for the pageant are fairly simple - entrants are only required to be exclusively AI-generated, with no restrictions on the software used. The rules state, "Miss AI welcomes creations produced from any type of generator, whether it's DeepAI, Midjourney, or your own tool."

As per Forbes, the contestants will be evaluated on their appearance, online influence, and the technical complexity involved in their creation. The social impact of AI influencers will be measured by factors such as fan engagement, audience growth rate, and platform utilization, as outlined in a release from the World AI Creator Awards (WAICA).

What's particularly interesting is that two of the judges on the four-member panel are AI-generated individuals themselves: Aitana Lopez from Spain, with over 300,000 followers, and Emily Pellegrini, who boasts more than 250,000 followers on Instagram.

Stanford HAI releases 2024 AI index report

📗News - The Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI) has published its annual AI Index, a detailed report capturing the trends in AI for the year 2023.

This year's edition highlights the increasing prominence of open-source foundation models, investments in generative AI, and the key players shaping the global landscape.

👩🏻‍🏫Here's everything you need to know -

  • In the past year, there was a significant surge in the release of foundation models, with 149 models unveiled, more than double the number from 2022. Notably, 65.7% of these new models were open-source, a substantial increase from 44.4% in 2022 and 33.3% in 2021.

  • Google emerged as the top contributor in releasing foundation models. Interestingly, since 2019, Google has consistently led in this area, with a total of 40 models, followed by OpenAI with 20.

  • The United States took the lead in developing notable machine learning models, with 61 models originating from the country in 2023. This trend too has remained consistent since 2019, with the U.S. consistently leading in model creation, followed by China and the UK.

  • Despite a decline in overall AI private investment since 2021, generative AI witnessed significant growth. In 2023, the sector attracted $25.2 billion in investments, nearly nine times the investment of 2022 and approximately 30 times the amount from 2019.

  • Here again, the United States dominated in AI private investment in 2023, with $67.2 billion invested, surpassing the next leading country, China, by approximately 8.7 times, and the United Kingdom by roughly 17.8 times.

🙆🏻‍♀️What else is happening?

🧘🏻‍♀️Unusual AI use cases

  • Enhanced beer brewing - AI is being used in the brewing industry to forecast preferred flavors, crafting distinct brews based on insights from customer feedback. London's IntelligentX has already employed AI to tailor beer, revolutionizing taste prediction for optimal brewing.

  • AI nail art - AI can create custom nail art designs and patterns for manicures and pedicures. For example, the company Preemadona’s Nailbot, an intelligent at-home robot manicure system, turns smartphone pics into personalized designs, merging tech and style for unique manicures.

  • AI meditation - AI is also being used to customize meditation experiences to suit individual preferences. Consider this - the popular Headspace app uses AI to provide tailored meditation experiences based on users' personal preferences for sounds and visuals.

👩🏻‍💻Prompt engineering tips

  • Encourage creativity - Being creative with your prompts can help you get more accurate results. For example, you can start your prompt with "Imagine a world where..." This can help the chatbot think outside the box and come up with more innovative ideas. This method can be particularly beneficial when you are looking for solutions to problems that have no easy answers, or when you are exploring futuristic concepts.

  • Choose words with care - Like any computer system, AI tools can be excruciatingly precise in their use of commands and language, including not knowing how to respond to unrecognized commands or language. The most effective prompts use clear and direct wording. Avoid ambiguity, colorful language, metaphors, and slang, all of which can produce unexpected and undesirable results.

  • Pose open-ended questions - Rather than constraining the AI with binary yes-or-no inquiries, it thrives when presented with open-ended questions. For example, a simple prompt such as "Was the American Civil War about states' rights?" will likely lead to a similarly simple answer. However, a more open-ended prompt, such as "Describe the social, economic, and political factors that resulted in the outbreak of the American Civil War," will generate a detailed answer.
