US Air Force confirms first successful AI dogfight
👨🏻✈️News - In a recent update, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) reported that during a test conducted last year, an AI-controlled jet successfully engaged in a dogfight with a human pilot.
This test was part of DARPA's ACE program, initiated in December 2022, which aims to develop AI systems capable of flying fighter jets autonomously while adhering to safety protocols established by the US Air Force.
✈️What were the results? DARPA conducted its first successful dogfight test against a human pilot in September 2023 by installing the AI system inside an experimental X-62A aircraft.
The X-62A faced off against an F-16 piloted solely by a human, resulting in close-range encounters at speeds of 1,200 miles per hour, with both aircraft engaging in "high-aspect nose-to-nose engagements" and coming within 2,000 feet of each other. While DARPA did not disclose the outcome of the dogfight, it noted that although human pilots were present on the X-62A with the capability to deactivate the AI system, the need to do so did not arise.
So far, the agency has carried out 21 test flights and plans to continue conducting tests through 2024.
Reddit set to introduce new AI-powered features for enhanced user experience
🤖News - Reddit is set to roll out a range of new features for the year ahead, with the majority of them being powered by AI.
These updates include faster loading times, enhanced tools for moderators and developers, and an AI-driven language translation feature aimed at making Reddit more globally inclusive.
Reddit's chief product officer, Pali Bhat, said that the integration of Language Model AI for translations on Reddit aims to revolutionize how users interact with the platform. This feature will allow users to engage in discussions in their preferred language, irrespective of the subreddit's primary language. For instance, if a user from France posts in French, an English-speaking Redditor would be able to read the post in English and respond accordingly. The French speaker would then see the response in their own language and reply in kind.
⏩What's more? AI will also be at the core of Reddit's updates to the moderator experience. Recently, the platform introduced keyword highlighting features to help moderators identify potentially rule-breaking content within their subreddits, alongside tools to manage increases in new members. Building on these updates, Reddit plans to introduce new tools, including a Language Model AI trained on moderators' past decisions and actions.
New wearable AI emerges as critics slam Humane's AI pin
🤹🏻♀️News - Amidst the criticism surrounding Humane AI's AI Pin, a new AI wearable has entered the market.
Limitless, a software development company based in Colorado, has unveiled the Limitless Pendant, a brooch-style wearable AI device that the company says has a unique use case.
💫What's the unique use case? The coin-sized wearable device features real-time transcription and note-taking abilities. As users engage in conversations, the pendant records and transcribes discussions, then condenses them into concise key points for easy reference later.
The device is also equipped with multiple microphones, ensuring high-quality audio capture even in crowded environments. Essentially, these features could prove especially useful during fast-paced meetings or discussions when jotting down every detail is challenging.
🔏What about privacy though? Given that the device records conversations in real-time, concerns about user privacy are completely valid. However, the company has added a feature called 'Consent Mode', which uses voice identification to record only the voices of those who have explicitly consented to be recorded.
Another noteworthy feature is the 'Confidential Cloud' infrastructure, which ensures that the user's data remains secure and under their control, even in situations involving requests from employers and government agencies. According to the company, this sets them apart from traditional cloud-based services, where users often compromise their personal information for the sake of convenience.
Well, at an introductory price of $99 a piece, this doesn't sound half bad—but we'll leave it to you to decide if it's worth a try!
